After enjoying pizza baked in wood fired ovens in several restaurants and hearing Kiko Denzer talk about earth ovens on public radio, Susan thought it would be fun to have our own wood oven for pizza and bread. Tim had been thinking about a wood fired barbeque-grill and we decided to build an outdoor kitchen that would include both.

We wanted to utilize local resources and recycled items, and the outdoor kitchen needed to be made from long lasting materials, and be aesthetically pleasing as well

The foundation for the oven and barbeque-grill was made from local limestone built with the assistance of a local stonemason and capped with recycled slate and marble.  The metal fabrication for the mud oven and barbeque-grill was done by a local machine shop.  The clay for the oven was dug at Tim’s brothers’ farm and a nearby road cut. The structure over the oven was timber framed from local, native Eastern Red Cedar by a local craftsman and roofed with a standing seam metal roof by Susan’s brother. Tools for the mud oven and barbeque-grill have been made by a local blacksmith. Both the mud oven and barbeque-grill burn wood harvested on our farm.

Internet searches lead us to the books described below and a wood-oven Internet group where we have learned much from people sharing their experiences of building and baking.  We highly recommend the book and publications listed in our Publications section of the website, to anyone considering building a wood fired oven.

Our outdoor kitchen is located in the back yard of our rural home in Southeastern Minnesota.  Our dog Fluffy is waiting in the background for a treat from the mud oven or barbeque-grill.
