In countless empty hours he fingers the silent telephone, forgets
morning pills, how to boil water, if he's still a poet, a father, or the best friend of what's-his-name.
Pants pockets bulge: unwrapped cherry cough drops, pennies, a wad of crinkled kleenex to hand his daughter (what's
her name?) when she cries.
