Students Aspiring To A
Better Education Program
The
SABE (Students Aspiring to a Better Education) Program is sponsored by the
Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston in partnership
with Stephen F. Austin High School. It was established in 1985 as the
"Hispanic Family College Project" in an effort to help at-risk students achieve
excellent academic standing, graduation, and the University of Houston
enrollment.
The title "SABE" was adopted in 1998, but the program's mission remains the
same.
Services
SABE provides the following services:
- tutoring sessions
- mentoring programs
- skills workshops
- leadership retreats
- educational summer sessions
- summer employment opportunities
- field trips
Also, upon admission to the University of Houston, SABE program graduates are
automatically accepted into the Urban Experience Program, and become eligible
for an $8000 to $10,000 scholarship.
Requirements
The SABE program members are required to adhere to the following
requirements:
- maintain a minimum 2.5 G.P.A.
- enroll in college preparatory courses
- complete at least 2 hours of supervised studying and/or tutoring per week
- attend program sponsored meetings and events
- attend skills workshops
- participate in community service projects
- participate in the program's summer session
Interested in Joining?
Students who are interested in becoming members of the SABE program must meet
the following criteria:
- be a high school freshman
- have college aspirations
- have no less than a 2.5 G.P.A.
- demonstrate academic achievement
- demonstrate financial need
- demonstrate leadership ability
