SENTIMENTAL ITEMS...
As a Hoarder many of the things you are keeping have a sentimental value. You keep the receit of when you went out on a date because you want to always be able to remember that evening.
But if it were just about a couple receits, there really wouldn't be a problem.
When you have OCD, you may be very scared of forgetting some things such as: information, images... But by far the hardest thing to think of forgetting are the memories, the snapshots of your life.
However, when you Hoard Memories you stop life...
You forget that there is more to come and that memories can at times pull you down. They draw you back to a different time and while this time may have been pleasurable, this time is behind you. Focus everything you got on today and on creating new memories for tomorrow.
We are so scared of letting go and of possible forgetting important things in our lives, but maybe forgetting is a positive thing. Why do we forget? Must have a purpose...
Why not accept that when we forget something it might have been the right time.
That by forgetting, you allow more room for new experiences and information.
Chances are you won't forget the important things and not only that, but chances are that you wouldn't even be able to find the receit anymore. What's the use of memories when they are hidden amongst piles of clutter? They provide you with a comfort that is fake. Whatever you try to do, life will go on and you won't be able to stop this even if you decide to keep evidence of every hour you are about. Learn to accept that some things will be forgotten but that in all, an impression will always stay with you.
Some things are of course worth keeping, such as letters and photo's and some other things. If these items have such an impact on you, keep them safe in a box. This way your reason to keep them will be true, since at all times you will be able to open the box to touch and look at the items that mean so much to you.
Right now you fool yourself into thinking that since they are somewhere amongst the mess, they are there and they are there for you to look at if you wanted to.
Is that control thing. Wouldn't it be nicer to truly have a place to go to to enjoy these past moments within a house that is living in the present? You will have some sort of box to step back in the past.
Now, you are simply keeping it all and are blending time together and not allowing yourself to move on.
Moving on doesn't have to seem scary, isn't about drastic changes but it is all about choices, is about being free.
