Chapter activities are conducted primarily for the benefit of H.O.G. chapter members. There are three categories of activities, all activities are identified as follows:

Why AM I A H.O.G.?
I've often wondered how many folks really understand why they joined the Harley Owner's Group. Is it to get a patch and a pin that I can display which will differentiate me from other motorcycle owners and groups, or is there some real benefit to being a member? It is said that a Harley owner "never meets a stranger on the road," implying that there is an automatic bond of sorts or perhaps a mystique about the rider that exists only with the Harley-Davidson brand. But this seems true enough, even if one is merely a Harley owner and not necessarily a member of H.O.G., the world's largest motorcycle club. So why would one join anyway?
The camaraderie which exists among Harley owners is without equal, worldwide; this in large part is made possible by the numerous benefits of being a member of both National H.O.G. as well as your local chapter, both of which serve to provide programs to bring fellow riders together. National H.O.G. membership provides a wealth of benefits such as the ABC's of Touring and H.O.G. Mileage programs. All designed to get you on your bike and on the road (not to mention the plethora of Rallies all around the country and the world). Additionally, there is the Fly and Ride program so that you can get on the road in different locations on the spur of the moment and don't forget about Motorcycle Shipping so when you plan your trip anywhere in the world you can have your own bike at your disposal if you so choose. There are also a variety of things to help you once you are on the road, such as Towing Reimbursement and Roadside Assistance in the event of a problem and Harley-Davidson Tours offers a great way to plan a trip, or perhaps more accurately, select one already laid out for you...they do the work, you just enjoy! One of my favorite things National H.O.G. does are the summer trips they lay out, such as the 75th Anniversary of Route 66 ride done last summer. I hated to miss that one. I had planned to be on line when registration opened, but grand kids have their own arrival schedules and sometimes they don't jive with what H.O.G. has planned! Another benefit is Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Insurance which is designed to take into account the downtime of winter by weighting the liability and collision parts of your coverage to nine months not 12...this savings alone probably pays for your annual National membership! Ladies of Harley (L.O.H.) benefits and programs are testimony to the fact that Harley-Davidson, like no other motorcycle company, takes the "significant other" part of the equation seriously.
So what's with local membership? How can that be any better than the above stuff? Well, the local chapter is where you get what I call your "week to week" care and feeding. It's where you meet a bunch of different, wonderful people who all love to ride as you do, provides a place where you can plan or take advantage of planned riding and activities, and above all make new, lifelong friends. It's your "neighborhood place" to meet, have fun, share road stories and plan the next great adventure! Why wouldn't you want to belong? A group of guys and gals meeting up at the dealer on a sunny, warm day for a ride to one of Georgia's beautiful destinations...it just doesn't get any better than this!
I believe with all my heart and soul that the Atlanta Chapter, hands down, has more to offer than any other I have seen. Judging both by what their published ride calendars show and by talking to members who have ridden with them, the other chapters seem stuck in a rut or just doesn't want to try to be creative. Every time I am on the road and visit another dealership, I look at their newsletter to see what is going on in that chapter. At Primary Officer's Training (P.O.T.) each chapter is asked to bring their newsletter and I looked at them all. I am always very proud to display ours and frankly when I imagine I am a member of one of those other chapters, I feel somewhat disappointed to see what others do in terms of planned rides and activities. When I see our ride calendar year after year, it tells me that the Atlanta Chapter has the most concerned owner involvement, the hardest working Officer Board and the most imaginative membership of them all. So, again, why wouldn't you want to belong?
RIDE FREE, RIDE SAFE, RIDE OFTEN!
Tom SigerfoosDirector,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
I hope everyone enjoyed the snow as much as I did. I got out and took a few pictures around the neighborhood. One thing I didn't do, was try and ride my motorcycle in the snow. I did get out and ride on the New Year's Good Luck Ride so I am good for the year.
One of my responsibilities as Assistant Director is to inform chapter members of H.O.G.'s programs and benefits. The first benefit that I think members should consider is H.O.G.'s Roadside Assistance Program. With the wind in your hair, the beautiful north Georgia Mountains in sight, all you need is a flat tire. It might, could and will probably happen soon or later. It will be taken care of quickly and you will be on the road again. As a member of National H.O.G., you can put these worries behind you for only $19.95 per year. For $10.00 more or $29.95 per year, you can get the Deluxe Package. It covers all the Standard Package features, plus emergency travel expense reimbursement. Who knew peace of mind was so cheap.
I have had Roadside Assistance for some time but have never had the occasion to use it...Lucky Me! If you or any of your friends have ever had the chance to use Roadside Assistance, please e-mail me with your experience...good or bad. I would like to see how it stacks up with our members.

Vernon "Big V" EldredRide Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
I hope everyone had a nice and safe holiday and is ready for a year of great rides. I am very excited about the upcoming year. We have planned (tentatively) to have more rides than ever before.
I would like to encourage those members who are new to the Chapter or new riders, to make a point to join us on a few rides this year. It is our policy for the group to ride at the comfort level of the least experienced rider. If you are riding with us for the first time, let the ride captain know at the safety briefing that you are a new to the group or perhaps a less experienced rider, so that we may adjust to your comfort level.
If anybody has a special ride that you'd like to see us make, please let us know so we can try to work it in with the rest of the rides already scheduled. Also, if you'd like to be a road captain and lead a ride or two, come and talk with me about it. I for one am certainly looking forward to doing a lot of good riding this year and I hope ya'll are too. So get the thing out of the garage, clean it up, service it and RIDE!
Ride Safe.
Gary LangmaidAssistant Ride Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Two things right away come to mind as I write this report...1st, come on warm weather! And 2nd, GO TITANS GO!
So, how was everyone's holiday? Are we getting eager to ride again? This year I hope everyone gets involved in the Chapter. It's a great way to meet new friends and to get out and ride. We hope you will enjoy some (or all) of the rides that we have planned this year. Whether it will be an official Chapter ride or a L.O.H. ride or event, it is for all members; MEN & WOMEN.
Here are the L.O.H. events planned for February and March:
February 9, Saturday...L.O.H. Sweetheart Ride Dave and Busters. Meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 12:00 noon and leave at 12:30 P.M. Dave and Busters is located off Franklin Road in Marietta. If you do not wish to ride, please make plans to meet us there in your car.
March 17, Sunday...L.O.H. 2nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Ride Blue Willow Inn. Meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 10:30 AM and leave at 11:00 AM. Following lunch, we will tour the Fox Vineyard, which is about 6 or 7 miles from the Blue Willow Inn. Lunch is from 1:00 PM to2:30 PM. We have a private room for this event. The cost is $14.95 per person for lunch, please try to have the correct change (Tip Is Included). Cost for Fox Vineyard is $2.00 per person. The tour will last about 40 minutes and four (small) tastings. Don't forget to wear your green for St. Patty's Day! For the use of the room the restaurant requires 37 guests. I am hoping this is not a problem. Food at the Blue Willow Inn is home cooked and always very good (even the green mashed potatoes and green biscuits). This is a buffet style lunch. Hope to see you there!
March 23, Saturday...L.O.H. Easter Egg Hunt for S.H.A.R.E. House. Meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 2:00 PM. Lots of fun and surprises. Atlanta Chapter Members...Please donate: candy Easter eggs (individual eggs wrapped in plastic) Easter Baskets, etc. Anything you think that would be appropriate for an Easter Egg Hunt. If you can not attend the party, please drop items by the shop anytime before Saturday March 16 so we will know what we will have to buy. Thanks for your support. Watch your email, Yahoo Chat, Hotline and Newsletter for updates on this event.

It looks as if winter is finally here. More often than not we find ourselves on four wheels with a heater. However, don't forget the two wheeler in the garage.
1. Always check to make sure that any custom additions are properly installed and that all bolts (re-moveable Loctite?) and fasteners are secure.
2. Make sure that engine oil is fresh...old oil that has been run awhile contains caustics which are not healthy for a motor.
3. Try not to keep a full tank of gas...it tends to go stale after sitting. Try keeping the tank partially full and every now and then pour in some fresh gas.
4. Try running your bike for at least five minutes every few weeks to help keep the battery charged.
5. Check tire pressure often...it changes from the cold and from sitting. Try moving the bike so that the tires will not be sitting on the same spot (no flat spots).
6. If your bike sits longer, a shop manual has details on storage maintenance. It is also a great resource for further maintenance checks.
These are just a few suggestions (your choice) to help you maintain your bike, so that when there is a chance to ride there will be less of a chance for surprises (not so good to bad). If you are unsure on anything, reference your shop manual or ask the service department at the dealer.
By properly maintaining your bike, future riding will be more enjoyable and more importantly SAFER!
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. HISTORY
Four years ago this month, February, 1998
Plans were being made for the trip to the historic city of Savannah, GA April 17, 18 and 19 and we would be taking the scenic back roads to Savannah.
The following was also mentioned:
"If you have a suggestion to make about a trip you would like to see us take, jot it down and give it to one of the officers the next time you see us at the shop or "out in public". We are always looking for new ideas for the Chapter. There is even talk going around about an "iron-butt" dinner ride to Lakeland, FL some time in the spring or summer. What do you think? Let us know!"

Meet Michele Smith:
Hello. My name is Michele Smith. My occupation is what my husband Steve calls a Domestic Goddess. I have two beautiful children; nine and five. I also run a business out of my home called Space Walk of Conyers, I rent Moon Walks (those things that you blow up in your back yard for birthdays and let your kids jump in). I also have cotton candy, popcorn and snow cone machines. I haven't quite worked out how to deliver a space walk on my motorcycle, but we're thinking about it.
I will tell you a little about my riding career. I used to be a passenger. Last year my husband and I went on the ride to Charleston. I drove the HD Dually and pulled a couple of motorcycles. I really had a great time especially in the early morning with the heat on. But, I was getting this feeling like something was missing. I just couldn't figure it out. One night we started talking about the New Riders Edge Class. So when we got home, first thing I did was sign up. I was in the first Riders Edge class offered at HD Atlanta. I had never driven a Motorcycle and was a little nervous. I did drive a moped when I lived at home but I don't think that counts. Taking the course was the best thing I've done in a long time. At first. I really thought the class was going to be an easy way to get my motorcycle license. I was sadly mistaken. I actually had to work very hard.
The first night we did some class work and I had no idea what the instructors were talking about. Something about roll on and this "fineC" stuff. I couldn't grasp. Then we were told to be back in the morning at 8:00 A.M. (it is Memorial Day weekend, I was planning on sleeping until at least 10:00 a.m., I live 45 min. away). We were also told to have a long sleeved shirt, long pants and boots (no tennis shoes). Don't forget your helmet and gloves and safety glasses too. I was starting to think I signed up for boot camp.
The next morning at 6:00 a.m., I was in the shower and then on the way to the Harley shop. I was hoping I was not going to drop the bike in the first five minutes of being there. We donned our gear and headed out to the Tarmac. There, we talked some more about "fineC" on the motorcycle and I began to understand what they were talking about. We could touch it now. Needless to say by Sunday afternoon I was riding. I was going to first, second, downshifting and coming to a complete stop in the designated time/area. I can do it!
I passed with flying colors. I forgot to tell you about what my friends call me now, "Sally Safety." I am a little strict about getting on the bike and doing things correctly and in a safe manner. Well, the next thing you know old Jed's a millionaire and we purchased our first Harley (2001 Heritage Softail Classic, Purple and Ice). I have put 3000 miles on it in only two months. I take the kids to school in the mini van and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. I am a motorcycle momma...My Salvation!
Michele SmithAdvertising Officer,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
H.O.G. Around the Shop!
When we as H.O.G. members/customers come into the dealership, we get a snapshot of what goes on at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. In my travels around the Atlanta area and the country, I have visited a lot of Harley dealers. I find them to be welcome havens from riding or business trip. All have friendly people working there and most are accommodating. I think Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is the pinnacle of Harley dealerships. This year I am going to try and bring the dealership closer to Atlanta Chapter members and the members closer to the dealership.
Most of the time when we go to HDA, we go to look at bikes, attend a meeting, service our bike buy parts or Motorclothes. We see and interact with the people behind the counters, look at the mechanics through the window and chat with fellow riders. Next time you are at the shop take a moment and introduce yourself or just say hello to someone either behind the counter or on the floor. I think you will find that you will be remembered and greeted next time you stop by. As part of getting to know the folks that work at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, I am including a small profile and picture of one of the employees that you see all the time. As the months go by, I will and introduce you to more employees.
The H.O.G. Club honors Tommy Tyner on News Years Day by riding to Buckners. This year we had to go on the 29th. About ten of us, led by B.K., met about ten more bikes at the restaurant and proceeded to make serious inroads to Buckners bottom line for the year. Shyra Houghton told us a little about Tommy. He was a long time employee of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta when it was located on Sylvan Road. Tommy was out testing a customer's bike, and was struck by a motorist. He died on the scene, leaving behind a family. Tommy was just doing his job. This unfortunate accident can remind us all to have due diligence when riding.
If an employee stands out to you or goes that extra mile to make sure your Harley experience is special, please let me know. You will find me around the shop on Saturdays, or you can email me at ddevlinhda@aol.com. Any other concerns about Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G., feel free to talk to me or of course, any of the other officers.
Meet Toddy Siegel:
Toddy Siegel, has been with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta for two years. She added this job to her already full time job as a mom. With two children to take care of, Hannah 7, and Jonah 5 and working full time in the Motorclothes department, it's a wonder she always has a big smile for everyone. When not taking care of customers, she divides her time between ordering merchandise and keeping the showroom looking attractive. Toddy just celebrated a birthday the day before Christmas. She lives in Villa Rica, and is a native of Atlanta, graduating from Pebble Brook High School. She is planning to take the Rider's Edge Course this spring and hopefully will get a bike soon after that. For now, she has to settle for riding with a friend. In addition to riding she likes to take Hannah and Jonah camping. Her favorite work day is H.O.G. meeting night. She loves meeting the chapter members and would love for you to stop by and introduce yourself.

Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL: http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give us you name, city and email address. That way other members will recognize your name and be able to email you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. You will also be able to check out other Harley related clubs around the world. If you have problems, email me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Michele Smith is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
