THE GOO GOO DOLLS
"GUTTERFLOWER"
RELEASE DATE: APRIL 9, 2002
WARNER BROTHERS RECORDS
The Goo Goo Dolls' new release, "Gutterflower" shows a side of the band that was overshadowed in their last album. The threesome's softer side in 1998's triple-platinum selling "Dizzy Up the Girl (DUTG) has been reduced." On "Gutterflower" they return to their hard rocking, punkish roots. "Overly sappy" songs like "Iris" and "Name", as singer John Rzeznik refers to them, do not exist on the new release. "Gutterflower" is edgier, loud, and more raw as a whole than we've seen the Goos in quite a few years.
"Here is Gone," the first single, is already in rotation and is as catchy as "Broadway" was. The song draws on Rzeznik's personal experiences in relationships.
"Big Machine," a likely single, has an upbeat tempo and great hooks reminiscent of "Fallin' Down" and "Just The Way You Are," from their 1994 and 1990 albums, respectively. This song is arguably the best and most memorable on the album.
After 6 previous albums and an anthology, fame has not left the Goos at a loss for evocative, intelligent material. And reticent they are not. In the dark and sexy "Truth is a Whisper" Rzeznik sings, "And do you find it hard to sleep, or is it easy on your own? And will you ever find some peace before you're gone?..."
"Sympathy," is a slower song with an intangible, country music feel. The emotive performance shines with lyrics like: "It's hard to lead the life you choose...when all your luck's run out on you...It's easy to forget..and you choke on the regrets.. who the hell did I think I was....And I'm not sure where I belong. When nowhere's home and I'm alone."
Bassist and singer, Robby Takac, a stranger to mainstream radio, contributed equally once again with his endearingly scratchy voice. Even when Takac sings heartrending lyrics, his melodies can't help but be upbeat and congenial. Takac comes through again with a splendid performance.
"Gutterflower" is an enjoyable experience and is evidence of the progression of the Goo Goo Dolls since their inception in the early `80s. And with an extensive tour in the works, they should be coming to your town soon.
