COALITIONAL POLITICS
The movement towards broadly-based parties regains popularity
The President hailed the formation of the Liberal Democrats Party as the greatest achievement of Cyberia's democracy, for it gave voters parties from the Left, Right, and Center (the LDP supposedly being Center) to choose from. As the LDP moved to the Left, the Labor positioned itself closer to the center. Then, the PFP and a host of other parties made Cyberia a multi-partisan republic.
Yet, after the LDP and PFP, a truckload of minor parties consisting of 1 or 2 people have come and gone, mostly by apathy. The President has several times over the past year called on the citizens of Cyberia to unite behind fewer parties based around common goals. Many countries, like Germany, Australia, Canada, and Great Britain have thriving political systems passed on more than two parties, but not really any more than 5.
Gary Ceres has offered the Liberty Party for the Right to unite under one banner against big government. The President has been slowly moving the Left in that direction, uniting the LDP and Labor, and nudging the PFP to join with the (now) Liberal Party in a broadly-based party of the center-left. In fact, the Christian Democrats and the PFP have come closer together as well.
The truth is, that the President's "undemocratic" idea has become increasingly popular as people realize the maximized political appeal of fewer parties. Truth be known, there will still be a number of parties more than needed, but we are moving in the right direction. The PFP, CD, and Liberals are moving into a broadly-based center-left party, potentially called something like the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, the Right realizes its majority can only be found in working together. The Socialist and other left-wing parties may tighten their grip on radical politics, while the extreme right should push for added strength by working as one party and not two.
This new form of coalitional politics will make elections more competitive, we think, and allow everyone to unite more on ideology and not divide on personality.
