You know you have the necessary training, knowledge and experience to make it work. The only limitations are the financial restrictions and the available equipment .... we want to give you some resources to overcome them !
Welcome to our DATABASE related resources ...
... Based on the resources provided on this page (and there is much more to come) we are convinced that educational institutions with only limited hardware or older equipment at hand can design useful curricula to teach their students the basics in this field.
dBASE / XBase related resources ( DOS based )
More dBASE related resources...
Clipper - all versions (from Summer 87 on)
DBMS systems (MS-Windows based)
CLARION for Windows
- our choice !
SQL resources
On this page we are listing - esp. for our target group(s) - tools, tips and tricks to learn the basics as far as "database management" is concerned. The programs listed here often originate from the late eighties and early nineties and most of them run also on equipment with very limited capacities ( XTs, 286, 386 machines ).
Please keep in mind : these tools are mainly intended for educational purposes; we have NOT tested any compliance with Y2K related issues ! But we have some tools on this page to help you to check this out (see also the next pages:
dBASE
Resources
dBASE books, manuals, tutorials etc.
The purpose of this page is to provide everyone with the chance to learn about "data processing", "database management" and what really matters to get some foundations in this field. Even the most sophisticated packages nowadays are all build on basics which can be learned from the tools we provide here.
Esp. schools and their teachers will appreciate these tools because it allows them to build up some useful curricula even when only modest hardware is available.
We try to obtain legal copies of older commercial software packages like dBASE III +, dBASE IV, Clipper Summer 87 edition and many more. We will keep you posted in this matter (we might be able to help you already now - please e-mail us with your specifc wishes).
See also our page: Software offered what is available and/or the latest entries in our Guest Book !
dBASE III plus / dBASE IV related resources ( DOS based )
We already have an offer for a fully licensed package of both versions (see our Software offered page)
And: we are in contact with the manufacturers of the newer dBASE
versions at: http://www.dbase2000.com
We will keep you posted
!
GREAT NEWS ! We have been in contact with the Chief Operating Officer of dBASE Inc. - Mr Duke Merhavy, PhD - and they are willing to consider our request on a case-by-case basis. In other words, they will consider a particular request for a particular project/cause/organisation where we would provide assistance to.
If your school is interested to teach database basics etc. in their curricula and we know what you need - probably also depending on your available hardware - then we can make together a plan about the project, what you need etc. and approach dBASE Inc.
You will not only find little helpers to support the mainstream packages, but also ...
- specific applications (mostly freeware/shareware working with dBASE
(.dbf) files, i.e. statistics, querying data etc.
- instructions how to repair damaged .dbf files
- zipped files with many resources related to dBASE which we have found
on the Internet:
- HTML pages with links to practical applications
- manuals and tutorials
to name just a few ...
We have used most of the applications listed here ourselves (and/or are still using them for specific purposes).
CARTE BLANCHE - a good tool to learn the basics (click to download)
Carte Blanche - an overview
Carte Blanche the Data Handler is a utility program for use with dBase III compatible DBF files. Carte Blanche will recognize and allow access to any dBase III DBF file, and provide the ability to modify, manipulate and create output from the DBF. Some of the more interesting features include a Query Interface, Form Letters, Labels , List Printer, Data Entry, Modify Structure , Intelligent Import , Global Search and Replace, Duplicate Finder, Frequency and Time Period Analysis.
We have incl. a sample file (donation.dbf) with the package to get you started !
"Software / program documentation" is one of the important tasks in an IT environment.
SNAP is an excellent tool to document dBASE, FoxPro and Clipper systems - download the file snap.zip, unzip it with pkunzip.exe and read the file snap.doc first (printout recommended).
Download
SNAP from here ...
An excellent learning
tool to learn the foundations and to document your dBASE application in
a professional manner !
Intelli-Trieve is a weighted retrieval utility for users of dBASE III, dBASE III+ (trademarks of Ashton-Tate), and compatible database managers. The weighted retrieval capability provided by Intelli-Trieve is a powerful and versatile tool that performs a very complex task easily - without programming.
Weighted retrieval has been available for years to users of powerful mainframe systems like IBM's CICS. Intelli-Trieve now brings this powerful concept to microcomputer users. Intelli-Trieve performs weighted retrieval by comparing each record in a database to user-defined selection criteria, and producing a copy of the database with the records arranged in descending order of 'acceptability'.
The result is an entirely new 'view' of your data, one that cannot be attained through standard indexing, filtering or sorting operations. Intelli-Trieve allows you to extract new and valuable information from your data in ways that were not considered in the original database design - without altering the structure of your databases.
Contains 2 courses:
- Basic design of databases with dBASE IV
- Advanced database design with dBASE IV
[ If you are interested to learn (or to teach) dBASE IV - there are already offers of licensed owners to provide their packages to someone who needs them. ]
An extensive SQL course (working with dBASE - .dbf - files). 140 pages of documentation is provided in this package. Very recommend (I have learned the basics of SQL myself with this package). Runs on very modest machines !
SSQL SPECIFICATIONS
Requires only one floppy diskette
Program only takes up about 122K
Minimum Memory 256K
Maximum number of columns 128
Maximum length of a row 500 bytes (characters)
Maximum number of rows:
It is limited by memory. With a 640K PC, the OUTPUT size
of the table cannot exceed about 400K. The tables on the disk can
be larger, you just could not display all the rows and columns at once.
Also, you could join multiple large tables as long as the resultant table
was not over 400K. This means that a table with rows 100 characters wide
could contain about 4,000 rows.
Maximum levels of subqueries 14
Maximum number of tables you can join 14
If you compare this with the "monster" applications

With these resources it is possible - even with very modest older equipment - to build curricula which allow the students to progress. When using a Windows environment at a later stage then excellent foundations have been laid.
Database Management Systems
running under MS-Windows
We have an original SUPERBASE Version 2.0
package (incl. manual). Runs under Win 3.1, 3.11 - Please contact us.
We are using Clarion for Windows for our own developments.
We have an excellent evaluation edition of CLARION for Windows Version 1.5 available on CD ROM (we have learned CLARION with this one). The evaluation edition is excellent for teaching purposes (no time limits, however a limit of 100 records per file is imposed).
Requires: Win 3.11 or higher
There are several ways to get this one.
We might burn a copy of the CD on request and
mail it to the recipient - or:
we send the single files as e-mail attachments
to the recipient.
Please inquire if you are interested !
To get an overview we have for you 5 Brochures in .PDF format to download:
Broschure.pdf - an Overview
Origins.pdf - how it all developed
Pressrls.pdf - Press Release
Manufact.pdf - about Software Manufacturing
Vision.pdf - what the future might hold
If you have equipment fulfilling the minimum requirements - see file: Broschure.pdf - then we strongly recommend to consider CLARION as a teaching subject in the field of DBMS (Database Management Systems).
You can run the Development Environment on any system meeting the minimum
system requirements for Microsoft Windows
3.x, Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft WindowsNT 3.51. For better
performance, we suggest your system have at least 8MB RAM, 12 MB RAM, or
16 MB RAM for these respective operating systems.
You’ll also need between 8 and 20MB free hard disk space, depending on the Setup options you select.
The applications you develop will run comfortably on even those machines
meeting only the minimum requirements for these operating systems. The
applications are complete - however not suitable for sale because there
is a splash screen at the start of any application advising that this is
only an evaluation copy and then there is the limit of 100 records per
database file. However for teaching purposes it is an excellent tool.
SQL [ Structured Query language ]
Here we have many programs and resources for you, which we will add over time !
An extensive SQL course (working with dBASE - .dbf - files). 140 pages of documentation is provided in this package. Very recommend (I have learned the basics of SQL myself with this package). Runs on very modest machines !
