Dear Friends:
Healthy oceans have been integral to our planet ever since simple life first appeared in them 3.3 billion years ago. Our oceans feed the world, cool our planet and regulate climate, and create nearly one-half of the global oxygen supply. They sustain biological diversity, provide us with leisure and recreation, and contribute significantly to our Nation's GNP. Our oceans also embody a profound spirituality, and no one who beholds them can ever remain completely unaffected.
Yet, in one generation -- our generation -- we are witness to the wholesale destruction of our oceans. Each day, billions of gallons of sewage, pesticides, and industrial chemicals flow into the sea. Our commercially valuable fish stocks are in decline, severing a generation of fishers from a livelihood that has sustained them and fed us. Marine mammals are acquiring cancerous lesions from the accumulation of heavy and toxic metals. Quite simply, our arrogance is destroying us.
Now in its tenth year of existence, American Oceans Campaign has taken a leading role in protecting and restoring the vitality of our Nation's waters. AOC is educating the American public and policymakers about the need for establishing strong public policy to protect our marine resources. We are implementing innovative and cooperative programs with the private sector, government, and public interest groups. Our environmental mass media, and community outreach programs are increasing awareness and activating the public in protecting and preserving our marine environment.
