ROBERT F. KENNEDY,
JR. AND TED DANSON JOIN ENVIRONMENTALISTS
TO CELEBRATE CLEAN WATER ACT 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Washington, DC,
October 10,
1997 –- Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., environmental lawyer and activist, and Ted
Danson, actor and founder of the American Oceans Campaign, join members of
the Clean Water Network to mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the
Clean Water Act. The press conference will be held on Thursday, October 16,
1997, at 10:30 a.m. at Thompson’s Boat Center (located at the intersection of
Virginia Avenue, NW and Rock Creek Parkway) on the banks of the Potomac River in
Washington, DC.
October 18, 1997, is the 25th
anniversary of the Clean Water Act, one of the most important and effective
environmental laws ever enacted by Congress. Thanks to this law we no longer
have rivers that catch fire or brim with raw sewage. The Potomac River, once
considered dangerously polluted, is now a source of recreation and beauty for
visitors and residents of the Washington area.
But, we still have serious water
pollution problems across the country. Toxic algae has killed millions of fish
in rivers and estuaries around the country, and the number of fish contamination
advisories and beach closings continue to rise. Health problems for wildlife and
for people increasingly are being linked to water pollution and fish
contamination.
In Washington, DC, and more than
100 locations around the nation, the Clean Water Network will be celebrating the
anniversary on October 16, 1997, by releasing a report, "A Prescription for
Clean Water: How to Meet the Goals of the Clean Water Act," which describes
the water pollution problems our country still faces. Stories about problems all
around the country and some notable cleanup successes are included in the
report, along with water quality data on every state.
The report will be released by
local organizations in the following states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, ID,
IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR,
PA, RI, SD, TN, TX, VT, WA, WI, WV. Please call the Clean Water Network for
local contact names.
The Clean Water Network,
established in 1992, is comprised of more than 1000 local, state, regional and
national groups in all 50 states working to strengthen federal clean water
policies so that our nation’s waters will be fishable and swimmable. Member
groups include a variety of organizations representing environmentalists,
commercial fishermen, recreational anglers, surfers, boaters, family farmers,
faith communities, environmental justice advocates, labor unions, civic
associations and recreational enthusiasts.
