Watering Eye in a Child

Many mothers complain of sticky fluid collection at the inner end of their child's eye. Their baby's eyes are not red, but seem filled with tears all the time.

Anatomy of the Lacrimal system

Nasolacrimal Duct Block

The Nasolacrimal duct is formed during the 7-8 month of pregnancy. In some babies the formation is delayed. The tears do not drain normally and this causes watering.

Management

The problem usually goes away on its own by 6 months.

Lacrimal Massage by gentle but firm pressure from inner side of eye downwards towards the nose.
Probing - In which a small probe is passed through the punctum down to the nose to create a clear passage.
