Exam of Child's Eye

Examination of children

This requires time and patience and differs from the adult exam.

The parents can have a general idea about the child's eye sight by holding small toys at different distances from the baby and seeing his response.

The school teacher has the most important  role in a school child. Many times she/he will find kids squinting to look at the board. Some may cross their eyes later during the day, when they are getting tired. Some may blink too often. If the teacher is a good observer and has a good rapport with the parents, such problems will be detected earlier.

Regular School Health Check-Up should include Eye Check-Up. Children are more willing to co-operate for such Check-Ups when all their friends are under-going them too, as in schools!

Children who are too young to read may require special acuity charts, like the C-chart. In this the chart, the child guesses which end of the 'Ring' is 'Open'.

Frequency of eye exams- as recommended by AAO and AAP.

Evaluated in nursery at birth
At 6 months
At 3-31/2 years
Every year starting at 5 years.

Referral to an ophthalmologist is indicated  when -

Some times for detail eye exams and to do simple procedures children have to be anesthetized. This is called as Examination Under Anesthesia or EUA. An EUA is required, when there are problems like glaucoma, Tumors etc.
