Corneal Aging
Changes
My grandma can spot a
needle in a haystack, but she has a white ring on her eye. I worry about
it. Can you tell me what that is?
Commonest change seen with aging is the white ring at the
limbus, called 'arcus senilis'. Occurs after 60 years. It is
harmless.
The ones that occur more commonly in adult age
are :-
| Fuch's corneal dystrophy |
| Keratoconus |
Fuch's corneal dystrophy
-
In this the endothelial cell layer is damaged, and cornea gets swollen up
with water, thus affecting vision. If eyedrops do not relieve it, corneal
transplant may be required.
This can start at a younger age. The cornea becomes more and more conical,
adversely affecting vision. To diagnose Keratoconus Corneal
Mapping may be used.
The management in the initial stages consists of contact
lenses.
In advanced stage, Corneal transplant is the
only remedy.
