Colour Vision Testing
This is done using Ischihara charts. This consists of cards which have
colorful small pieces printed on them. A normal person can make out a pattern
and read a number in the colour, while a colour-blind person may not detect the
number. Some charts operate vise-a-versa.
Color Blindness affects 5% of the general
population. It is more common in males than in females. Color blind does
not mean the person cannot see colors at all. It just means that he cannot
distinguish between certain colors, for e.g. red-green blindness, means he
cannot make out red from green color. But other colors may be seen
perfectly.
Color Vision is very important for
identifying the signals while driving. Most color blind people cannot make
out certain shades of yellow and green, though other colors can be
differentiated. Severe color blindness is rare. The color blind can
nevertheless drive safely, since the sequence of the colors on the
signals is an International standard!
