ARMD- Age related macular degeneration
Due to aging, there is a collection of certain unwanted material at the
macula. It is just like the trash that gets collected in our old homes. Only
difference is that the body cannot throw it out.
It is seen as drusen, small white-yellow spots in the macular
area.
Picture showing Retina with ARMD:
This is the most benign and common form of ARMD.
Some times, there can be large collections, scarring, leakage, formation of sub-retinal
neovascular membranes (SRNVM). These are the dangerous forms, since they can
bleed into the eye, cause sudden vision loss due to vitreous haemorrhage.
ARMD is one of the most common cause of visual impairment in our aging
population
Symptoms -
The changes are more noticeable if they occur in both eyes.
Central vision is blurred, colours may appear dim. objects may appear
distorted, small (micropsia) or large (macropsia). The peripheral vision is not
affected.
So what shall I do about it?
Regular Eye
Exams are important, to detect the
dangers in time.
You can do a very simple test at home, use an Amsler's Grid.
The role of anti-oxidants is not proven, but they are worth trying!
Se, Zn, substitutes, Vit. A, Vit. E, Vit. C can be taken after advised by your
eye-doctor.
Protection from all light below 510 nm, is advised. This includes shielding
from blue, violet and ultraviolet light.
I have ARMD. Is there any treatment?
Fluorescein
Angiography is done, to detect any leaky membranes. If these are
seen, then Argon laser is used to burn them. This is not possible in all cases.
For vitreous haemorrhage, bed rest is given, and the haemorrhage is allowed
to clear. Rarely surgery is done to remove the blood.
If your macular condition is bad in both eyes, and doctors decide they cannot
do anything about it, you might be given low
vision aids.
