Radial keratotomy

Surgeries to correct myopia

Every surgery is associated with risks. The risk-benefit ratio has got to be considered before the decision is made. Full knowledge about the procedure has to be acquired before you go ahead with it.

Radial keratotomy (RK)

In this, radial cuts are made like the spokes of a wheel in the central cornea. This makes the cornea flatter. Now, when the light enters, it will be focused exactly on the retina, thus correcting the Myopia.

It is successful in good hands, but its popularity is on the decline, due to better techniques.

Disadvantages:

Thins the cornea. Cornea becomes more prone to injury.

Epithelial in-growth, haziness can occur.

Chances of infection.

Steroid drops have to be used for at least six months, therefore complications of steroids can occur.
