During the 2002 through 2003 school year, I instructed students who were struggling in their reading classes through the Metrocenter for Urban Education program at NYU. Metrocenter places tutors in low performing, or Chancellor's District, schools throughout New York City. My placement was at P.S. 196, a school for second through fourth graders, located in the Bronx.
I was responsible for providing my students with one on one tutoring that would complement the instruction they received in their classroom literacy curriculum. Each student's goals were determined by regular assessments I performed and through communication with the student's classroom and reading teachers.
I found great joy in watching my students develop both their reading skills and confidence. Knowing that I played a critical role in the growth of their knowledge of literacy and self esteem reaffirmed my commitment to devoting my career to education.
