Database of lesson plans that can be searched by grade and/or subject matter. A veritable smorgasbord of activity and lesson ideas.
www.everythingesl.net A collection of lesson plans, thematic units, and inspiration from teachers in the K-12 ESL field. Contains templates and downloads for crafts.

The website of Fred Jones, author of Tools for Teaching. Contains a collection of what he calls "preferred activity time" activities. Bountiful with interesting educational games and activities to used for incentives in positive reinforcement.
www.puzzlemaker.com As the name implies, this site will assist you in creating crosswords, mazes, and word searches. Fabulous for vocabulary reinforcement. Applicable for all age groups.

A website chock full of interesting activities and lessons for ESL students. Created by Jerelyn Hurley, a K-8 ESL teacher in New Jersey. An entire section is devoted to activities appropriate for summer session ESL classes.

Designed for the instruction of preschool to third grade aged children. Provides lesson plans, print outs, and arts and crafts ideas about hundreds of topics. Includes a lengthy picture dictionary that can utilized for beginners of any age group. My high school ESL class enjoyed our dictionary activity thoroughly!

The website of Nanduti, an organization that enables foreign language elementary school teachers to connect with each other. Contains articles, event notices for foreign language teachers, program models for elementary school foreign language programs, a list serve, and other resources for foreign language teachers. Also useful for ESL teachers.

A compilation of childrens fiction and nonfiction stories used as part of the Success For All reading program. Also contains poems and short anecdotes that relate to the stories.
Meyers-Stangl, K. (2000). Hands-On Phonic Activities for Elementary Children. West Nyack, NY: The Center for Applied Research in Education.
Hundreds of activities, worksheets, and games that incorporate the practice of language arts skills across the curriculum. Word and letter studies can be utilized in a balanced literacy approach.
Jorgensen, S. and Whiteson, V. (1993). Personal Themes in Literature: The Multicultural Experience. New Jersey: Prentice Hall Regents.
Includes many short stories, poems, and anecdotes from authors of numerous cultural background. Has teaching ideas and questions for discussion as well.
Peregoy, S. and Boyle, O. (2001). Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL. A Resource Book for K-12 Teachers. NY: Longman.
Suggestions for implementing a whole language curriculum into your ESL classroom. Well researched and detailed.
Thompson, J. (2002), First Year Teacher's Survival Kit. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass.
A guide through the highs and lows beginning teachers are challenged with. Contains ideas and suggestions helpful for even veteran teachers.
List Serves
TESOL K-12
A list serve devoted to providing ESL teachers with a forum to discuss questions and ideas they have about instructing English language learners. To subscribe email to leave the subject line blank and write "subscribe TESLK-12" followed by your first and last names in the message box.
Nandu
A list serve for foreign language elementary school teachers. Ideas and activities useful for ESL teachers as well. To subscribe, go to and click on "Join Nandu today." Otherwise, send an email to nandu-request@caltalk.cal.org. Leave the subject field blank. In the message field, type: SUBSCRIBE YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME. It is possible to receive messages in digest form. It is possible to read list serve messages without joining the list serve. You cannot, however, post a message without first joining the list serve.
