How to utilize space to facilitate a learning community:

Classroom set-up, especially the arrangement of desks, is very important to encourage communication in the classroom. I prefer desks to be arranged in a double "U" shape, as seen in the pictures below, or in groups. This enables cooperative learning and class discussions since the students can easily interact with each other.

Visual displays are very important to assist in contextualizing the language for second language learners. Displaying student work helps instill pride in a job well done. The appearance of a classroom helps contribute to its atmosphere and must be considered when teaching all students.
