My Philosophy of Teaching

Teacher w/pre-school students

I hear, and I forget.  I see, and I remember.  I do, and I understand.
- Chinese Proverb

I believe that students learn a language by using the language. Because of this belief, my classroom has a student centered approach. Children are actively involved in language use through activities, literature discussions, and games.  My belief in Gardners theory of multiple intelligences is evident in the different content areas my lesson plans are related to. I believe that a variety of lesson plan activities demonstrates that a teacher embraces a variety of learning styles. Art, music, dance, technology and content areas are all incorporated in my teaching of the English language.

Students learning from one another is an important aspect of my teaching philosophy. Collaborative and cooperative learning is integrated into my lessons. This teaches students communication skills and the ability to work as a team. Cultural knowledge is also promoted through student interaction because of the diverse backgrounds found in a English as a Second Language class in New York City. By working with each other, students learn to embrace each others' cultures.

Research has proven that children learn interpersonal language skills at a much faster rate than the language necessary for academic success. This is why I believe in focusing on classroom language development in the ESL classroom. Verbal academic language skills are enhanced through classroom discussions. However, interpersonal communication skills are not ignored.  Conversational skills are taught through various games, activities, and collaborative learning exercises.

Literacy is highly emphasized throughout my teaching methodology. This is because literacy skills are vital for both success in academia and society. Students read and write about various topics relating to a current unit's theme. Journals will used both to improve students writing skills and as a diagnostic assessment of their comprehension of material. In my classroom, students are encouraged to focus on the content and fluency of their writing. Mistakes are not corrected in journals; I only comment on the message the student communicates. Peer editing is another means to promote literacy. This not only improves the students knowledge of the functions of writing, but allows them to learn how to be critical friends.

The National Standards of Foreign Language Learning Education are followed throughout my approach to education. The five standards of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities are goals incorporated throughout my lesson plans. Adhering to standards is essential because it ensures that a teacher is addressing the various areas of language development.

Diagnostic assessment will be performed through classroom discussion and reading students journals. Students will create their own portfolios for achievement assessment. I believe this creates a more relaxed classroom atmosphere than traditional forms of assessment. Students who are more confident perform and learn better.

Students learn best when their emotional needs are taken care of. I believe in fostering emotional maturity in the classroom. Providing time for students to talk with me, listening to their concerns, and encouraging their independence are essential aspects of my teaching strategy. A teacher should also be a model so I conduct myself with behavior becoming for a teacher.

Good teachers need to develop their own knowledge of both their skills and the world around them. I attend conferences, contribute to list serves, and read journal articles concerning language education. I develop my own learning by continuing my own education. Being a student allows me to be a better teacher.
