DIRECTOR'S REPORT
CHANGE IS IN THE AIR
Literally¼have you all been out on your bikes enjoying this period of sunny skies with ultra low humidity? Almost unheard of for Georgia this time of year.
Change is definitely in the air -- both in the weather and the chapter. Our fall riding season (my personal favorite) is almost here and the calendar is filled with activities to get you out there riding in the cooler weather, complete with fall colors just around the corner. North Georgia awaits us!!! Unfortunately, one of our favorite reasons to ride north disappears this weekend. I am referring to the closing of LaPrade's on September 15th after some 50+ years of operation, but we will find something else to do in its place. Also this month marks the end of daylight savings as we revert back to "regular hours" on October 27th ; for me this is always a bummer.
Participation is way up this year and I would like to keep this going. I have seen quite a few of you working towards your "Covered Bridges of Georgia" tour patches and I hope this has been a fun thing for you to do. Some of our chapter rides have been aimed at this goal both directly and as an impromptu part of a ride, where the bridge visitation was not necessarily planned out. I'm also working on a similar tour idea for next year as well -- Georgia has lots to offer.
We've taken another step closer to breaking ground for our chapter clubhouse with the completion of one bike raffle and starting on the next---we need all of you to be really aggressive in selling those tickets for the February 8th raffle for the 2003 Heritage Softail Classic. The primary funding for the clubhouse will come from the money we raise on the raffles, and I think we have already sold about 100 towards the goal of 400, but there is still a lot of hard work to be done. Insofar as the clubhouse is concerned, we will also likely have a clubhouse design planning committee put in place as we get closer, so let one of the officers know if you are interested in helping out with that. My initial thought is that we intend to contract out a good deal of the work, but where we can we might want to consider using a lot of "sweat equity" in areas like painting, hanging suspended ceiling, installing doors, etc. Please think of what you skills and services you could bring to
the table and let's plan some H.O.G. workdays once this gets underway. You'll probably find that you'll get a tremendous sense of enjoyment and contribution by doing this. Getting back to the August 24th raffle, I thought the night of August 24th was very well done and everybody I talked to had a great time. Thanks to Shyra and to all of the volunteers who made this the success it was -- it was exciting and "active," what with the silent auction and the sale of the items where we used the playing cards. Ronnie Godwin made a great emcee and kept things rolling right along -- the three plus hours passed
really quickly. I was out of it about half way through the drawing, but found it fun to hang out and see who the happy winner was. Turns out Jeff Williams, our winner, had not been on a bike in 15 years and did not even own a helmet or have a learner's permit at the time. I would bet by Monday evening he had both!!!!
Let's have a great fall riding season and if there is anything we can do for you, by all means let us know!!!

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Hey, how y'all doing? Looks like we are doing fine! Y'all are still showing up to all the rides and activities, so I guess we are doing something right. Another month has passed and we are still going strong. The officers and ride captains are
working very hard for you, so when you see a ride captain or officer let them know how we're doing. Tell them that you had a good time on their last ride or activity, it's the only payment we get. In return to you I would like to say a big thank you to you our membership for volunteering to do things and for supporting us the way that you do. Another month and another Ride Captain, our very own Big Haired Lady, Big Red, L.O.H. Officer Terri Felton. She has worked hard and has met the requirements to be our 1st trained female ride captain this year. She has been on both sides of the seat, so ladies she will be a great help and inspiration to you, and doing all this with a smile. Congrats Terri!

THE TRAILERS EDGE
"From the Tow Vehicle":
The temperature is whatever I want it to be. I can eat, drink, or smoke at my leisure. I can listen to the radio, cassette, CD, sing to myself or just quiet. I can rest and relax coming or going. Do not be a closet trailerer, be proud of it. I only have one problem, I could not find me a patch, " I trailered mine to trailer week." All joking aside do not give in to peer pressure, do what's best for YOU!
Tips on trailering
1. Check towing capacity of a tow vehicle.
2. Get the weight of your trailer empty, your motorcycle, and all your gear. Make sure that it is compatible with your tow
vehicle.
3. Bolt or rivet the ground wire from the trailer wiring, to the trailer. Do not relay on the ball making a good ground. This
will eliminate dim or flickering lights.
4. Center the weight of the motorcycle on the trailer. It will pull easier and you will not exceed the tongue weight of your
trailer.
5. Buy the proper hitch that will keep the trailer as level as possible.
6. Use more than two straps on your bike, try to go to the frame, not just the handle bars. This makes it more stable; if you
only use two straps and one lets go, you will need to fix something, after you stopped crying.
7. Keep check on air pressure in your trailer tires and the tie down straps.
8. If you have smaller tires on your trailer than your tow vehicle, go slower.
9. Always make sure all lights are working before and while on your trip.
10. Give yourself plenty of room to stop or turn.
If anyone needs help just contact me, "TRAILER VERN."
PS. Look for a map reading skills course in the near future.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
As you all probably know, the Bike Wash scheduled for September 21 was cancelled. I know everyone was looking forward to having their bikes washed by our Ladies of Harley. Rest assured this event will be rescheduled, probably for the Spring.
Now that Fall is here, it's time for our Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale. This event will be held on Saturday, October 12th
at the Pavilion behind the dealership. We really need some great cooks to entice us with their concoctions. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information. This was a big event last year so you don't want to miss it!
Donations are currently being accepted for candy and trick-or-treat bags for the children of Share House. We will not be doing a ride to Share House, but rather will be making up Halloween bags for the children. All donations should be dropped off at the dealership into a box marked Share House Halloween no later than October 25.
Share House has a request of our members. First, they want to remind everyone that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month - please remember those affected by domestic violence. Second, they are in desperate need of dressers (gently used) and bed sheets, and would greatly appreciate any help we can give them. Sheets can be dropped off in the Share House box and I will deliver them. If you are interested in donating a dresser, please let me know. Everyone at the Share House appreciates your donations.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Going on one of the chapter rides? Heading to the mountains to ride the winding roads? Rolling to Daytona to cruise Main Street? Well if you answered yes to all or any of these questions, take a moment and consider a few things:
1. Chapter rides have been going good with a lot of people attending. This means a lot more bikes on the rides and bigger
groups.
2. Riding the curvy roads are fun, but remember speeds and lane positions are constantly changing.
3. Biketoberfest is Cool, but very crowded (tire to tire at times).
Now, how to get through all this safely? Refresh and remember, safe riding practices (i.e., pre-ride checks, hand signals, spacing between bikes, etc.)
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

Four Years Ago This Month, October 1998
Four Years Ago This Month, October 1998
Paul Gardner wrote:
The Gatlinburg Ride was successful. We had more than 75 people for some of the best weather and riding in quite some time. We gathered under the "Lunching Pad" at The Varsity downtown we then rode US 441 north to Cherokee. And then onto the winding mountain roads over the Smokes to Gatlinburg.
The people at the Edgepark Motel demonstrated the most organization of any motel where the Chapter has ever stayed. They had "Welcome H-D of Atlanta" on the sign out front!
The next morning at 6:00 a.m., I led a bunch of hearty souls on a Sunrise ride in the Smokies where we went out of Gatlinburg and took some quiet roads through the country. All went well up to where the road dead-ends and you have to bear to the right. Well, being in the lead and it being dark still, I was in the curve and into the spilled gravel before I knew it. The bike and everyone involved survived with minimal damage.
We cranked back up and completed our ride without incidents. When we arrived back at the motel one of our members was having starting problems. Just about everyone had gotten involved. If you see photos of the ride, yes, that is me blowing into a Fatboy tank to pressurize the fuel.

DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
Stop in the shop on Saturdays and remember to say hello.
The Harley community lost a friend this week. Bob King passed away recently. Bob and his wife Margaret were active in the North Georgia Chapter, and over the years worked hard on the state rallies. Margaret is a member of the Atlanta Chapter. Bob was a native of Atlanta, and had many friends and lots of family to pay tribute. He will be remembered.
If you missed the raffle party, you missed a great time. The Fatboy raffle was a great success due to the efforts of a lot of people, especially Chris and Eddie whose contributions to the event were above and beyond. Don't miss out on the next
one. The cost of a raffle ticket is well worth it just to get an opportunity to go the drawing. My ticket was 17th from the end, so the anticipation lasted well into the night. For those of you who attended, make sure you get a ticket for the next one, for those who missed it, don't make the same mistake twice. Get in on the drawing for the 2003 Heritage Softail Classic.
Remember if your bike is coming up on a maintenance cycle, call the shop early and get an appointment or you may have to wait awhile. Fall riding season is fast approaching so you want your bike to be in good shape for those cool mountain
rides.
With all the new bike sales we are getting a bunch of new members. I hope all you new members will come out and join us at the meetings, and participate.

MEET STEPHEN FLOURNOY
New Ride Leader
Monday through Friday you'll find me behind a desk as a Senior Tax Accountant for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Saturday and Sunday you'll find me having to make an even tougher interpretation of the law. Southeastern Conference football or riding my Heritage Softail -- they don't get any tougher than that! A country boy at heart from the neighboring state of Alabama, football has been my life for about 28 years now. However, almost one year ago this month, I was introduced to a new tradition -- owning a Harley Davidson! Needless to say my priorities have been slightly altered! I've enjoyed riding with the many new folks that this great machine has introduced me to. And to clue you in on the decision that I have reached for the weekends ahead -- I'll see y'all at the Sign-In sheet.

THUNDER ROAD/DAWSON POOL ROOM RIDE RECAP
Where do I start, first I would like to thank everyone that came out to ride to Dawsonville. We had sixteen bikes - twenty-two people, and the weather turned out to be a beautiful. Thanks, Gary for running sweep for the group. We ran without a mishap, and I am very thankful. I lost count on the green traffic lights that we made it through. Someone gave me the credit, I think it was a lot of luck and the fact that our group rode the proper distance that made the difference; great job hogs. Gordon Perkel, owner of the Dawsonville Pool Room, didn't let us down -- the burgers were great. Thunder Road, Georgia's Racing Hall of Fame, a trip back to when moonshine runners became the founding fathers of NASCAR, and the home of Bill Elliott's family racing museum, was fantastic. I would like to thank Amanda, Joe & Dave for participating in their first chapter ride.
Come on and let's ride!
Roger Smith, Road Captain
TOCCOA RIVER RIDE RE-CAP
Our ride to the Toccoa River restaurant was really enjoyable as we took all back roads once we made it to the Talking Rock area on I-575. In Talking Rock under very threatening skies we donned our rain jackets, but somehow we were able to constantly dodge the rain directly, although we did ride through a lot of wet areas where the rain had just been and got a good deal of spray on us and our bikes. But as soon as this would happen we would find a sunny patch of sky and dry out quickly, and overall the ride was more sun than clouds. I was a bit concerned with the parking we would encounter at the restaurant, but when we arrived we were the first to get there and we all were seated on the deck where we could view and
hear the river. After some good food we motored across Blue Ridge Dam and stopped to re-fuel, where we put the rain gear back in the bags. We had 26 bikes and about 34 or so folks on this ride and all seemed to enjoy themselves and the countryside.
A large group of us, up for a long ride decided that we would visit three of the covered bridges on the tour, and so off we went towards Helen by way of Blairsville and US 129 S to the Richard Russell Scenic Highway. I had forgotten how curvy Richard Russell is, as it starts off rather mildly and then just when you think "this isn't too bad", the sharper curves appear -- lots of 'em! We found Stovall Mill Bridge easily, snapped our photos (and also initialed books on the spot), then it was off to Lula, GA to visit Lula Bridge. On this one, I got a bit lost as the map in the guidebook is not correct. As it was getting later in the day and as I tried to figure out where I had gone wrong, several folks decided to get on home, but four us persevered and with the help of "local directions" went on to find the bridge---hint: best way to get there is off of GA 51, not GA 52. Then it was off to the west through Gainesville towards Canton on GA 369 and a visit to Poole's Mill Bridge which was really easy to find---although Bill and Vicky Jones found that you can't get a trike through the gates; so they
walked on down to the bridge and made their photo. By day's end four of us had three bridges "notched in our belts" leaving only 7 more to go---and it was a long day; for Tommye and myself it was 305 miles and for others a lot further. Bill and Vicky probably did 450 that day. Tommye and I concluded with a stop at the Towne Lake Longhorn's as the others opted to "get on down the road" and headed for home. It had been a long day, but the weather was also really nice and the day ended with a very euphoric feeling, as most Harley days do, with a feeling that everything was right with the world. I think this ride is a keeper!!!
COVERED BRIDGE HINTS
LULA BRIDGE: follow GA 51 to get to the bridge easily. The map in the guidebook is wrong as it shows Antioch Road running between GA 51 and GA 52 (on the south side) but in fact, Antioch Rd. does NOT hit GA 52 at all-it runs into County Line Rd instead. Also, you will have to photograph this bridge from the highway with the bridge in the background as it is not accessible.
HOWARD'S BRIDGE: according to Bill and Vicky Jones, you want to go to this bridge from the Smithsona Rd side, not the other side. The non-Smithsona side takes you down 3 to 4 miles of a dirt and gravel road which Bill says "has not been graded in years" and will beat you to death; additionally there are lots of dogs running the area which seem to take delight in heckling the bikers. Again you are out there to ride and have fun, so don't risk dropping your bike or having to fend off carnivorous critters with bad manners---go the recommended way!!!
Touring Members: Please e-mail Tom Sigerfoos at dynabear@aol.com with any other hints you have. We appreciate the hints and thank those of you who "found out the hard way". These rides were not "pre-ridden" and when the guidebook was put together the website was solely relied upon for directions. In the interest of safety and concern for your fellow riders please pass these on and we will get them in the HOGWASH as well as posting to our bulletin board. Future guidebooks will have the hints in them.
