A word from John Maizels ...

I was at RMIT in 1973.   During that year, I miserably failed first year Communications Engineering, spent most of my time in Building 20, and discovered computers.

By the time I got there, 3ST was well established, regarded as the best set up of all the student stations in Melbourne, and had a history of technical innovation.   I was elected as Chief Engineer for 73.  My contribution was to add to the engineering innovation, and provide linkages back to some of the other campus radio stations in Melbourne (I hung out at 3CT in late 71, and built 3MU in late 1972).  I can recall that we didn't even have circuit diagrams for most of the gear!

Some of the highlights of 1973:

  • I designed and installed campus radio's and maybe commercial radio's first full stereo studio (commissioned over the Moomba long weekend in 1973).
  • Start of a complete refit of the building 20 studios.
  • We put a studio into one of the Casey Wing lifts for Ormond Week (believed to be a first anywhere).
  •  Frequent multiway audio linkups with Caulfield, Swinburn and Monash radio stations.
  • A new format - "The Eclectic Circus" covering many many music styles (Andy Reed as Programme Director)
  • formation of Student Radio Association in 73 or 74 to bid for the Limited Commercial Licence which eventually went to 3CR.   SRA was 3ST, 3MU, 3CT, 3SW and possibly Footscray Tech.
Some of the stunts we pulled:
  • radio on and around the building of the Moomba Float (3ST provided the 24-hour music feed for the float builders, and did live crosses to other campusses.   Much of the competition for the floats that year happened well before the parade).
  • putting an OB studio in one of the Casey Wing lifts during Ormond Week. I have a magazine article covering that... with pictures...  and we were on ABC TV news.
  •  terrorising the manager of the caf on air.   Since the feed was going into the caf, we were able to have lots of fun at her expense.
Some key players (from memory) in 3ST:

1972: Brad Smart, Mark Newstead, Mark Skurnik, Harold Bracegirdle.
1973: Andy Reed, Tim Alder, Steve Murrell (aka Steve Anderson), George Vasiliadis, Carol Cross, Wanda Piskozub, Barry Bron, Noel Barnden.
1974: Gary Schultz, Adrian Harvey, Mal Bolding
1975: John Duigan (as Manager of 3RRR) -note: think John may now be a well established Australian filmmaker who directed Sirens and Flirting amongst others.

Some additional points of interest:

  • 3ST (or maybe Studio 1, or Studio 2) was regarded as the oldest student radio station in the country, but  was never awarded a transmission licence in its own right
  • The period 1968 to 1974 was an extremely active time for Student Radio in Melbourne.   Many firsts and ground-breaking activities happened.... and although the transmissions were to a limited audience, the effects and outcomes were much more widespread.
  • the licence which went to RMIT in 1975, and which was manifest as 3RRR, came about through repeated submissions by 3ST.
  • In the early 70s, there were a number of 3-way hookups of the landline stations for lunchtime programs, using experimentatal phone interface technology.

John also chatted to me in a phone interview about his time spent at SRA and at stations like PBS, 3MU (Monash Uni) and 3CT (Caulfield Tech.) A transcript or realaudio copy of this interview will appear here soon.

More information on station management.
