SKVC Drill Platoon with Subedar Jaikishan

The National Cadet Corps (or NCC for short) does not need any introduction to an Indian. This student organisation is the largest in the country and the estimated strength is 11.2 lakhs! My college had an NCC unit which was the 1st Company of the 24th Kerala Battalion N.C.C. (Infantry).

I got enlisted in the company as an ordinary cadet when I joined the college. I found the NCC life most attractive and started actively taking part in the NCC functions. It is through the NCC that I gathered more information on the Indian Armed Forces. I attended more than 5 camps and through this I realised the value of discipline and community living. Camps were real fun with its own set of tough routines and punishments. I could visit lots of new places and meet different people.

CQMS Sachin.P.K and the classic Shaktiman Army Truck I got my first stripe within 6 months. In my second year I got promoted to the rank of Corporal. I passed my "B" Certificate Exams with a "B" Grade, and soon became the Quarter Master Sergeant of my Company. During the NCC Day celebrations, 1996 I was selected to pilot the VIP during the guard of honour. That was an un-forgettable experience. It was a full military ceremony. Every one was in their ceremonial uniforms. The parade was commanded by CSM Sumesh, and me along with Cpl.Santhosh slow marched along with the VIP (I still remember the slow-march tune, it was the Rajasthani Waltz).

I appeared for my "C" Certificate exams, and passed it with an "A" Grade. By end of April, 1997 my days in the NCC were over. I had completed my degree course, and so had to quit the NCC too. Senior Under Officer, Binil kumar and myself prepared the Annual Report of the NCC. This report was later published in the college magazine, and it had my photograph too (the one you see below).

Many people hesitate in joining the NCC or Army. The main reason for them is the strict discipline and drill. A common man only sees the NCC cadets marching up and down. But it has got a lot of activities like firing, trekking and cultural activities. So join the NCC to enjoy life !!!!
