The Shirehorses LIVE at Birmingham NEC
December 6th 1997

Featuring:
Scrawn on drums
Lard on lead guitar
Chunky Hughes on the bass
and Prince of Darkness on rhythm guitar.
From the moment we stepped off the train and trooped towards the cavernous NEC arena, you could sense the presence of something big. As big as a Shirehorse. Forget support acts the Super Furry Animals and Blur, everyone came here with one purpose: to see the legendary 'horse ROCK OUT. As the bloke wearing the sandwich board shown here said; "Only ten minutes until the 'horse ROCK BIRMINGHAM!!!!"

Unfortunately, due to mis-management at the NEC, the Shirehorses were relegated to the first slot of the evening, a half-hour set starting at 7:10, with the support acts to follow. Blur were even given an hour and a half slot and an encore. Typical.
After the lights were dimmed and the voice over had reminded us of a time millions of years ago when Shire horses ruled the earth, the band came onstage to the tune of their seminal early eponymous tune, which was later ripped off by the Osmonds on "Crazy Horses".
Shy-er-hor-ses! Waaaaaah! Waaaaaah!!!!
Then they're off on a blistering set taking in tunes from previous incarnations not featured on "the worst album in the world... ever... ever!!!" as well as popular family favourites, including Pants-On "Plums Drop", Po-Fasis "I want a roll with it", Charley Twins "West Country Boy", Peela Tater "Ta la", and of course the Shirehorses "(now) I know (where I'm going) our kid". Then with another blast of....
Shy-er-hor-ses! Waaaaaah! Waaaaaah!!!!
they're off, never to return. However, one question remains unanswered: what the hell was that bloke with the sax doing? After the seminal 'horse had left the stage, it was surprising that half the audience hadn't left, happy in the knowledge that their 18 quid had been well spent, and the bands following wouldn't have a chance of scaling the musical heights that the 'horse had reached.
Mind you, the Super Furry Animals and Blur were both O.K. For support bands.
