So...what am I talking about?

OSTINATO; A repeated musical phrase.

Until recently the term ostinato has been relatively unknown to the drummer, the word often used in orchestral circles but seldom used in describing parts of popular music.

I suppose a modern "Pop music "equivalent of an ostinato would be a "Riff  or a pattern".

The drum set is a perfect ostinato instrument offten holding down several ostinatos at once.

Nearly all stylised forms of music are based on some form of an ostinato like the Latin clave.

A good (none drumming) example of ostinato would be  "Boogie woogie piano" style.

The left hand playing a repetitive bass line whilst the right hand is free to play melody or solo over the top.
The result is like the sound of two people playing at the same time.

Ostinato used to a higher level within drumming is now reaching new ears due to the of the greatest drummers of our time pushing the rhythmical boundaries ever upward.

By setting up an ostinato with one limb or more and playing freely with the remaining limbs ,one drummer can sound like a small percussion section or a machine.

I feel that this is an exciting way forward for drummers and drumming, well worth the time to learn.

I would like to thank all the great drummers for leading the way for all of us to follow .
 (even if slowly):).

P.s. Massive thanks to Grant Collins for all  the support and the inspiration for this site.*and kicking my butt from time to time*

I surppose a modern "pop"equivalent would be RIFF or GROOVE.

With its time keeping roll it's easy to see that the drum set is the perfect ostinato instrument capable of holding down several ostinatos at the same time.

Nearly all stylised forms of music are based on some form of an ostinato.

A good (none drumming) example would be the rock and roll piano BOOGIE WOOGIE style.
