Thats not as odd!

I first heard this idea played by Tommy Campbell and later by Dennis Chambers. It involves kicking the hi hat pedal plate with the heel to make a splash sound and then closing it with the toe.
Basic heel toe splash .

You can even play (ting ting t ting style) with your foot for a Jazz ostinato.

Here it is being used to even out an odd time phrase.By using heel splash it keeps the stokes from alternating and simplifies the pattern.

After spending a relatively short period of time practicing this type of phrase, you will be surprised with what you will be able to play over the top of it.

So amaze your mum or dog or any of your greatest fans!!!!!?
