Castles tend to bring out the
romantic in many of us, with images of knights and damsels
in distress coming to mind. Neuschwenstein is a little more
than 100 years old, and one of the last works of King Ludwig
of Bavaria. It is the archetypical Disney castle, and
thought to be the inspiration for the castle at the original
Disneyland in California. The fortress on the island of
Rhodes was an important stopping point for knights and
mercenaries travelling to and from the crusades during the
middle ages. The fortress dominates the north end of the
island, surrounding most of Rhodes Town, and the
harbour.
