The Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie originated in the Shetland islands off the north coast of Scotland where it has bred true for more then 135 years. It resembles a Rough Collie in miniature, with its thick double coat to protect it from the elements in its rigorous native habitat. It is believed to descend from working collies, the Iceland or Yakki Dogs which sometimes reached these islands on whalers and, possibly, the black and tan King Charles Spaniel. The Sheltie was recognized by the British Kennel Club in 1909 and a breed club was formed in 1914.

Character and care

The Shetland Sheepdog is an excellent choice of family pet for those seeking an intelligent, faithful dog which enjoys exercise, gets on well with children and makes a fine show and obedience animal. It requires daily grooming using a stiff bristled brush and a comb. Despite having originated in cold climes, it should not be kenneled outside.
