33-37.5cm (13-15in); UK at withers: 33-40cm (13-16in).
Coat: Short dense and weatherproof.
Colors: Any recognized hound color other than
liver, tips of stern white.
This small hound
had existed in Britain at least since the reign of King Henry VIII (1509-47).
His daughter Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603) kept numerous Beagles, some of
which were so small they could be put into one's pocket and so became known as
Pocket Beagle (now extinct).
The breed is often known as the "Singing Beagle" but is not noisy
indoors, reserving its voice for the chase. In Britain it is adept as hunting
hare and wild rabbit, and it has been used against wild pig and deer in
Scandinavia, and the cottontail rabbit n the United States. In the later country
and in Canada it works as a Gundog both seeking out and retrieving. It is also a
favorite companion and was the most popular dog in the United States in 1954.
Character and care
This affectionate, determined and healthy dog is usually long-lived and good with children. It makes a fine show dog, and is a good choice of family pet for those who do not demand exemplary behavior .It is not renowned for obedience and, in common with other hounds, will take advantage of an open gate, possibly ending up some distance away. Its short, weatherproof coat requires little or no attention, and the Beagle needs only average exercise when kept as a pet.
