The present-day
Border Collie is a descendant of working collies kept in the countries along the
border of England and Scotland. It has participated in sheepdog trails since
1873, and has been exported as a working sheepdog all over the world. Bred for
stamina and brains, the Border Collie has the natural instinct to herd, and will
crouch and circle from puppyhood learn to work from more experience dogs.
This collie has also made its mark as an unsurpassed contender in agility and
obedience work. Prior to 1973, it was likely to be entered in the files of the
International Sheepdog Society, and the British Kennel Club approved a standard
for the breed in 1976. The popular Border Collie now competes in both beauty and
obedience classes in Britain.
Within the past 15 years, the Border Collie has been increasingly chosen as a
domestic pet, despite being unsuited to an existence that does not offer
sufficient outlet for its energy and intelligence.
Character and
care
This loyal working
dog requires considerable exercise but only a regular groom with a dandy brush
and comb. It must be the ideal choice for anyone with their heart set on winning
obedience competitions.
