The Lancashire
Heeler has been known in its native country of England for many years as a
sporting dog and dispeller of vermin. As its name suggests, it was developed to
herd cattle by nipping at their heels, but also has strong terrier instincts and
is an excellent rabbiter and ratter. It is a small dog, and its coat is black
with tan markings. The breed was little known outside the north of England prior
to the 1980s. It was granted an interim standard by the British Kennel Club in
1986, and happily, breed members are now beginning to appear at dog training
classes and in local exemption shows as well as at the championship events.
Character and
care
The Lancashire Heeler is a happy affectionate little dog, which gets on well
with humans and other pets. It requires an average amount of exercise and daily
brushing.
