The Ratings
Wall-to-wall coverage of the Kennedy-Bessette crash caused a spike in the ratings for the three cable info networks. MSNBC and Fox News Channel both had their most-watched days ever on July 18, topping their reportage on Princess Diana's death and the Columbine High School shootings, and CNN drew more than five times its usual July audience. The JFK Jr. story didn't have such a dramatic impact on the viewership of network newsmags, however. While ABC's 20/20, CBS' 48 Hours, and NBC's Dateline devoted numerous hours to the topic, none of these programs topped a rerun of CBS' 60 Minutes (1st) featuring segments on gangster Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso, six jailed Iraqi dissidents, and Murphy Brown's Candice Bergen.
