THE NIELSENS
Emmy Awards hit ratings low and high

Maybe the interpretive-dance medley by hosts Jenna Elfman and David Hyde
Pierce was to blame: Fox's Sunday telecast was the lowest-rated Emmy Awards
show since 1990.
Still, the telecast's estimated 17.4 million viewers was easily the week's
most-watched program, a lull before the upcoming storm of season premieres.
It was the first time a Fox entertainment program has ranked No. 1 during
the week in all of Nielsen Media Research's measurements.
But the audience was still 1.9 million people smaller than the one watching
NBC's Emmy telecast last year.
CBS, led last week by its twin "60 Minutes" broadcasts, narrowly won the
week with a 6.7 rating and 12 share. Fox was second with a 6.6 rating and
11 share, and was easily the most popular network among the
advertiser-prized 18-49 audience.
NBC was third (6.3 rating and 11 share), followed by ABC (5.7 and 10), the
WB and UPN (which tied at 2.2 and 4) and Pax TV (0.9 and 2).
Fox also got a jolt of negative attention from Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a
Connecticut Democrat, and former U.S. Education Secretary William Bennett.
The two gave Fox its "Silver Sewer Award" for its "tireless, tasteless and
ongoing efforts to drag down network programming standards."
The two politicians criticized the new Fox series "Get Real," for showing a
mother finding her teen-age son in bed with his girlfriend. The show
premiered last week to lackluster ratings, finishing No. 50 for the week.
Fox issued a statement saying its programs had been rated appropriately
under the industry's voluntary standards to warn viewers of content. The
network said it respected viewers' freedom to choose their own
entertainment.
ABC's "World News Tonight" and the "NBC Nightly News" (7.0 rating and
16
share) tied for first in the evening news ratings race, trailed by "CBS
Evening News" (6.0 and 13).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the
nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of
in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
