THE NIELSENS
Three out of five sure ain't bad for `Millionaire'
ASSOCIATED PRESS
27-Jan-2000 Thursday
The ratings are becoming a rerun: "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"
was the
most-watched TV show last week. And the second most popular. And the third.
The game show helped give ABC another weekly Nielsen Media
Research
victory, and made a tight season race even tighter.
"Millionaire" drew 29.5 million viewers Sunday -- competing against
NBC's
Golden Globe awards -- and had 30.1 million viewers last Tuesday. Its
biggest audience ever, though, was Thursday, when 32.4 million people
watched, giving ABC a win on a night NBC usually dominates.
The "Millionaire" success hasn't necessarily translated to its
imitators.
NBC is doing well with its "Twenty One" revival, but CBS'
"Winning Lines"
and Fox's "Greed" had mediocre showings.
ABC averaged 15.8 million viewers in prime time last week (10.1 household
rating, 16 share). CBS had 12.9 million viewers (8.9 rating, 14 share), NBC
had 12.8 million viewers (9.0 rating, 14 share) and Fox had 11.3 million
viewers (7.3 rating, 11 share).
The competition for top-rated network this season is remarkably close. NBC
leads CBS by one-tenth of a household rating point, with ABC four-tenths of
a point behind.
"Malcolm in the Middle" continues as a success story for Fox. With
19.2
million viewers, it was second only to a "Friends" rerun for most
popular
comedy or drama series last week.
That showing softened the blow of some bad news for Fox: "Beverly Hills
90210" announced this week it is calling it quits after this season.
"Party
of Five," which sank to No. 84 in the ratings last week, is likely a goner,
too.
UPN led the mini-networks with 3.9 million viewers last week (2.5 rating, 4
share), while the WB had 3.6 million (2.5 rating, 4 share) and Pax TV had 1
million viewers (0.8 rating, 1 share).
NBC's "Nightly News" led the evening news competition with an average
of
12.8 million viewers (9.3 rating, 17 share), ABC's "World News
Tonight" had
12.4 million viewers (9.0 rating, 17 share) and the "CBS Evening News"
had
10.5 million (7.8 rating, 14 share).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the
nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of
in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
