THE NIELSENS
World Series is an MVP for NBC ratings
ASSOCIATED PRESS
04-Nov-1999 Thursday
NBC's victory last week in the TV ratings, courtesy of the World Series,
was more a solid single than a grand slam.
Nielsen Media Research ratings for the New York Yankees'
four-game sweep of
the Atlanta Braves were up 14 percent over last year's Series, and the two
games aired last week were easily the most-watched prime-time programs. But
the matchup still produced the second-lowest Series ratings ever.
Because this Fall Classic ended so swiftly, NBC was left with a night of
reruns last Thursday, when it would have broadcast a fifth game. That
enabled CBS to finish just one-tenth of a ratings point behind NBC on
Thursday.
The return of "Ally McBeal" gave Fox a much-needed boost. The show's
season
premiere was among the week's top 10 shows, but finished behind ABC's
"Monday Night Football" and the CBS duo of "Everybody Loves
Raymond" and
"Becker" in its time slot.
Fox's premiere of "Time of Your Life" was tied for No. 69, a sluggish
start
but still better than "Party of Five," the series it spun off of.
NBC's lowest-rated show was its new "Cold Feet," and it has already
been
canceled. Two shows largely centered on teen-agers, Fox's "Get Real"
and
NBC's "Freaks & Geeks," are also in real ratings danger.
For the week, NBC had a 9.6 rating and 16 share, followed by CBS (8.9
rating and 15 share), ABC (7.8 and 13), Fox (6.1 and 10), the WB (2.7 and
4), UPN (2.6 and 4) and Pax TV (0.8 and 1).
NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race with a 7.7
rating
and 17 share, followed by ABC's "World News Tonight" (7.4 rating and
16
share) and "CBS Evening News" (6.6 and 14).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the
nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of
in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
