NBC scores ratings win with NBA finals; `Survivor' gains strength

NEW YORK (AP) -- ``Survivor'' continues to build as the television event of the summer, but there were enough NBA basketball fans to give NBC a weekly win in the prime-time ratings race.

The two NBA Finals games between the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana Pacers were among the 10 most popular shows last week, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

For the second week in a row, ``Survivor'' was the most-watched program among viewers aged 18-to-34, normally an audience the older-skewing CBS has a lot of trouble reaching.

Viewership for the reality show with strangers marooned on a tropical island has grown each of the three weeks it has been on the air. Without competition from either ``Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' or the NBA Finals this week, the numbers are expected to increase again.

``Survivor'' also had its own ratings ``halo effect.'' The CBS movie that followed it on the air June 14, ``Addicted to Love,'' finished among the week's top 10 shows.

The reality TV genre is also doing well in a completely unexpected place. PBS said preliminary ratings for ``The 1900 House'' during its first two weeks on the air were double what the public broadcasting system normally gets in prime-time. The show follows a British family that volunteered to live in a house equipped only with appliances from a century ago.

``The 1900 House'' drew an average of 6 million viewers for its two airings, PBS said.

For the week, NBC had an average of 10.47 million viewers in prime-time (7.3 rating, 13 share). CBS had 10.41 million viewers (7.2, 13), ABC had 9.7 million viewers (6.6, 12) and Fox had 5.9 million viewers (4.0, 7).

UPN, buoyed by the continued strong performance of professional wrestling, had 3.5 million viewers (2.3 rating, 4 share), the WB had 2.1 million viewers (1.5, 3) and Pax TV had 1.1 million viewers (0.9, 2).

NBC's ``Nightly News'' won the evening news ratings race with 9.4 million viewers (7.0 rating, 16 share). ABC's ``World News Tonight'' had 8.6 million viewers (6.5, 15), while the improving ``CBS Evening News'' had 7.8 million viewers (6.0, 13).

A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of June 12-18, the top 10 shows, their networks and ratings were:
