THE NIELSENS
Dramas set pace in week's race for ratings

Dramas were the big sellers during a promising opening week for television networks, as
viewers checked out new series about divorcees rekindling romance, White House staff
machinations and a battling marital lawyer.
In a season marked by a glut of offerings for teen-agers and young adults, it was the more
adult fare that opened stronger. And it was a tough week for comedies.
NBC narrowly won the first week's Nielsens ratings race, primarily
because the strong "Saturday Night Live" 25th-anniversary special Sunday blunted
the impact of CBS' strongest night.
Two new dramas premiered in the week's top 10: ABC's critically acclaimed "Once and
Again," about two recently divorced parents fumbling through a romance, and NBC's
"Third Watch," about an emergency medical team.
NBC also had strong showings by "West Wing," the White House drama with Martin
Sheen as president, and the spinoff series "Law and Order: Special Victims
Unit." ABC was pleased with its new "Snoops," amid tough competition Sunday
night.
Two legal dramas did well for CBS: "Family Law," about a marital attorney who
must rebuild her career when her own marriage breaks up, and "Judging Amy,"
which fell off a bit from its premiere the previous week, but still posted encouraging
numbers.
Comedies haven't done nearly as well. Fox's "Action" has been a particular
disappointment.
For the week, NBC had a 9.9 rating and 16 share, followed by CBS (9.7 rating and 16
share), ABC (8.3 and 14) and Fox (5.3 and 9). NBC easily won among the advertiser-desired
18-to-49-year-old demographic.
Among the other networks, The WB (2.9 rating and 5 share) led UPN (2.5 and 4) and Pax TV
(0.8 and 1).
ABC's "World News Tonight" won the evening news ratings race with a 7.3 rating
and 16 share, followed by "NBC Nightly News" (7.2 and 16) and the "CBS
Evening News" (6.4 and 14).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated
100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given
show.
