``Survivor'' tops the Nielsen ratings list for the first time

NEW YORK (AP) -- ``Survivor'' topped the weekly television ratings for the first time, helping CBS to a victory in a week dominated by newsmagazines and game shows.

More than 24 million people watched 28-year-old chemist Ramona Gray get voted off the island in the fourth week of ``Survivor.'' So far, the 13-week summer series has gained viewers each week.

In another show of strength, a competitor has changed its schedule in reaction to ``Survivor.'' The new Fox series ``Opposite Sex,'' which was supposed to premiere opposite the CBS summer hit on Wednesday, was pushed back until July 17 -- a Monday night.

A lower-key summer hit is the CBS newsmagazine ''48 Hours,'' which repackages previously-aired material in a mystery format. It was the most-watched of seven newsmagazines in Nielsen Media Research's top 20 last week.

ABC's experiment of running repeat episodes of ``Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' also paid off. Five editions of the show landed in Nielsen's top 10, with all reaching between 15 million and 17 million viewers.

With second quarter numbers out, CNBC said it beat CNN in total day ratings over a three-month period for the first time ever.

The combined prime-time audience share for CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox was 44 last week, down from the season average of 52. That means cable viewership was up.

For the week, CBS drew 9.6 million viewers (6.9 rating, 13 share), NBC had 9.4 million viewers (6.7, 12), ABC had 8.8 million (6.3, 12) and Fox had 5.4 million (3.7, 7). UPN had 3 million viewers (2.0, 4), the WB had 2.5 million (1.8, 3) and Pax TV had 1.2 million (0.9, 2).

NBC's ``Nightly News'' won the evening news ratings race with 8.8 million viewers (6.8 rating, 16 share). ABC's ``World News Tonight'' had 8.3 million viewers (6.4, 15), while the ``CBS Evening News'' had 7.3 million viewers (5.6, 13).

A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of June 19-25 the ratings, listings include the week's ranking, with rating for the week and season-to-date rankings in parentheses.

An ``X'' in parentheses denotes a one-time-only presentation. The rating is the percentage of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. Each ratings point represents 1,008,000 households.
