THE NIELSENS
Holiday specials help CBS win ratings week
ASSOCIATED PRESS
16-Dec-1999 Thursday
The spirit of the season paid off last week for CBS, which
struck ratings
gold with a schedule padded with holiday specials.
Two CBS holiday movies, "A Season for Miracles" and "A Holiday
Romance,"
were rated among the week's Top 10 shows. Two "Frosty the Snowman"
specials
also did well, though oddly, "The Story of Santa Claus" was a ratings
loser.
The week's most-watched show was the first of a two-part "Frasier"
special
on NBC, where Niles Crane's secret crush on Daphne is revealed.
For the week, CBS had an average prime-time audience of 12.2 million people
(8.5 rating, 14 share), followed by NBC with 11 million viewers (7.9, 13)
and ABC with 10.7 million viewers (7.3, 12).
After months of bad news, Fox had a good week by winning the 18- to
49-year-old age demographic that is most prized by advertisers. The
Billboard Music Awards drew a strong 12.1 million viewers for Fox, which
had an average prime-time audience of 9.7 million people (6.3 rating, 10
share).
For the second straight week, UPN topped the rival WB network, and did so
handily. UPN had 3.9 million viewers (2.7 rating, 4 share), while the WB
had 3.1 million viewers (2.3, 4).
NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news competition with 10.9
million
viewers (8.2 rating, 16 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 10.6
million
viewers (7.9, 16) and the "CBS Evening News" had 9 million viewers
(6.8,
13).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the
nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of
in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
