Ekeniai, the shrewdest trader in all of Maniwo land. This guy was pretty nervous when I took the picture. He got out of there pretty quick when the flash went off. I hope we didn't scare him too bad. Another picture of Obes. This young boy inspite of his sober expression here, is quick to laugh and mimick us when we speak in Indonesian or English.
This little guy lucked out and made his escape during the night before he could become a Maniwo fast food item. Aboapia. Notice the bandaids on his chest. He came to us with a number of self-inflicted cuts all of which were infected. They cut themselves to rid themselves of the bad blood that is causing them pain. Piado taking a drag on a local cigarette. Everyone smokes no matter how young they are.
Tokomadi is the most influential man in the area. Fortunately for us, he has always had a quick smile for us. He is now building a new home near Tim's house so that he can be closer to us. Piado demonstrating his shaving techniques. It is quite interesting watching them see themselves in a mirror for the first time ever. Manepepea looks to be the oldest one in the area. We hope that he is still living when we are able to present the gospel. His wife has already passed away. This is the man who placed his had on my chest, pointed to the ground and said "Kioo." This means, "You stay or live here with us." (Read our October update for the complete story.)

This is Sepik. Take a good look at the read teeth made by chewing a mild narcotic called beetle nut. Over here they don't have social drinking, but they do have social chewing.

Demonstrating bow and shield techniques. As long as he's smiling, I think we're alright.

Every boy needs a good hound dog

I don't think Ashley will mind but I know Grammie's going to have something to say about this picture!

Look at those eyes!

In some places bathing is prohibited. They believe that evil spirits can enter their body through the water.

When in Rome .... The native in the middle belongs to us!

A good natured boy from a Citak village
