When we left the tribe in July, we left part of our hearts there too. But now we had a place we could call home. It is not everyone who has a helipad in their front yard. Our trip into Maniwo in August allowed us to get a little more set up. Here I am sitting on the edge of my bed. The mosquito net is more for the no-see-ums than the mosquitos. It wasn't long before even the unusual became the comfortable known -- even the daily washing of clothes in the local creek. Here is Tim taking care of his laundry.
Some of the commodities are a little on the rustic side. This is our toilet and those boards are supposed to offer some form of privacy -- NOT!!! One of our biggest assets to opening the Maniwo work has been Bonard Whatley. He is our own resident veteran missionary -- gormet chef. Here he is cooking up lunch for the guys. One of the greatest struggles we faced was being away from our families for so long. Being able to talk with them daily on the radio made the separation bearable. A small temporary 2-roomed shack won't work forever especially if we hope to bring our families in soon. This is our location for a house.
We brought in two chain sawyers who embarked on the strenuous task of carving lumber for us out of virgin jungle. This of course was another new experience for the Maniwo people. Not only do they naturally screw their faces up when they shave but they also demonstrated a wonderful Tim-the-tool-man awe of pwerful things that make a lot of noise. Four carpenters joined the two chainsawyers in transforming rough-sawn lumber into houses. They started on Andy's house and this is how it looked when we came out in September. Tim's house was started soon after and our house will be next when Tim's frame is under roof.
