SPYDER BLUE

SPYDER BLUE debuted last year on the Pharoah label with "Western Love" and "Life Outside" - two tunes from their "Hard Drive" CD album. This time, the trio from California is back with the country rocker, "OPEN RANGE." "Open Range", which was written by band member , Bruce Gaims, jumps out of the jukebox with all of the energy, harmony, and craft that make up Spyder Blue's signature sound. In addition to Bruce (guitar/writer), the other band members are David Fortin (stand-up and electric bass) and Steve Brooks (drums). The chemistry is marvelous. The boys draw from a growing stable of over one hundred original songs with rock, swing, blues and country roots. Not surprisingly then, Spyder Blue fans have come to expect rich, passionate, and irreverent shows. This group is truly larger than the sum of its parts.

SPYDER BLUE

"OPEN RANGE"

Bruce Gaims (guitar), David Fortin (stand-up and electric bass), and Steve Brooks (drums) are Spyder Blue. For some years, Spyder Blue was a duo playing anywhere and everywhere around Los Angeles while in search of a drummer. They had great songs, great chemistry, and a habit of putting on engaging, irreverent shows. In 1998, Steve Brooks answered an ad, came to rehearsal, and joined Spyder Blue. He brought artistic intensity, stellar drumming, and the third part in the group's vocal harmonies. Steve also brought some business push. The band, which had never recorded seriously, immediately cut some demo tracks at Capitol Records, and, later in the year, began work on "Hard Drive", their first full-length C.D. Spyder Blue sounds bigger than the sum of its parts. That alchemy, borne of signature songs and to-the-bone lyrics, is ignited by their harmonies and dynamics. The band has more than one hundred original tunes with rock, swing, blues, and country roots that grab and hold the ears. Bruce does most of the songwriting and arranging, but the gratefully unexpected always happens when Spyder Blue is working out a new song. The boys rehearse at Dave's art studio - a dark, friendly, upstairs cavern full of the proprietor's own fantastic sculptures and space enhancements. Dave's graphic talents and sweat are responsible for the band's logo, website, and the design and look of the "Hard Drive" C.D. package. When Dave is not busy playing music, doing graphics, taking a drive, or lifting weights, he gets out his tools and knocks down a wall or cuts a hole in the ceiling…. Bruce and Dave met at a park where both would go to do handstands and tricks on the rings and bars. Bruce was born in San Antonio, Texas, grew up in Los Angeles, and returned home after graduating with a history degree from Cornell University. Bruce and his brother run a fitness business, and Bruce is possessed with the joy of almost any kind of exercise. He refuses to eat any food that is not top grade "fuel" for his body. His wife puts up with him because he does the laundry and helps keep the dog in shape. Steve is New Hampshire born and bred. He and Dave share a Northeast U.S. connection; Dave grew up in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Steve is the most formally trained player in the group. He was in a top-flight national drum corps and then later earned his masters degree in music at the University of Southern California. He teaches music and works in a library to pay the bills. His fiery idealism is tempered only by regular outdoor excursions and tasty homebrewed beer. Spyder Blue's music is homebrewed. As a critic for one of L.A.'s leading musical trade papers declared, the band "goes for and achieves a timeless sound." Bruce, Dave, and Steve are not the type of people to settle for less. They get along while working hard together only because they share a sense of humor and a desire to give the world back as good as it gets.
