Gift Wrapping Table
As we did last year, Ladies of Harley will have gift wrap tables set up in the dealership to wrap all your Harley gift purchases. There is no charge for gift wrapping, however we will be asking for donations for Share House. Gift wrap tables will start on November 30, 2003 and will run through December 21. Hours for the table will be one hour after opening to one hour before closing. Volunteers are desperately needed so if you like wrapping gifts (or just want to help), please let me know what day/hours you'd like to help. Thanks very much.
New Web Page
Have you checked out Harley-Davidson of Atlanta's new web page? If not, go to www.hdatlanta.com and get familiar with it's content. There is even a calendar of the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. activities for the month nestled in there.
Welcome Mark Johnson
Let's welcome Mark Johnson, Motorclothes Manager. Check out how the show room has been rearranged to make the isles larger and like articles of clothing have been placed together. He is eager to please and if you have seen something in one the Harley-Davidson catalogs that you just have to have that is not on display, tell him and he will be glad to special order for you.
Member Benefit Change
Membership benefits will be changing with the New Year. Beginning January 1, 2003, all members will have to participate in a minimum number of two (2) Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. sanctioned events every sixty (60) days. Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. sanctioned events include chapter meetings, business meeting, rides, LOH meetings, volunteer efforts, and other special events as noted on the Chapter Calender.
Member participation is required to maintain your in-store discount at Harley-Davidson
of Atlanta.
All other Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. privileges will remain the same.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A WONDERFUL YEAR
As I cast an eye on the close of the 2003 riding year at Atlanta Chapter H.O.G., I would like to thank all the officers and road captains for their time and dedication to their jobs this year, as I think they put together the best program of rides and activities we have ever had in the Atlanta Chapter. And as I write this, the weather is still holding out for more riding - today, November 10, it is 70 degrees here in North Georgia. By this time of year I figured it surely would be overcast and cold most of the time so I scheduled my shoulder surgery for November 3. Now that I am in a sling for the next four weeks
or so, it is warm and sunny and I find myself wanting to be on the road. I sort of wondered about my hunch on the weather while we were in Savannah. I think the weather down there just blew everyone away - it could not have been better. Anyway, if you have enjoyed a particular ride or activity this year and haven't yet done so, take a moment to personally thank those who put all this together for you.
I would also like to thank you, the members, for your participation on rides, activities and meetings this year - we've set several chapter records in the process.
Next year promises to hold more of the same. While there are no major changes in the chapter officers, we will add some new road captains and will try to introduce some new ideas and ride destinations. We welcome your input - all you need is
an idea of somewhere to go, or something to do and we'll figure it out if we can. Remember this is your chapter and the officers and road captains are here to serve you - so let us know how we are doing, what it is you want to do, and where you want to ride. And remember to volunteer for some things, too - you get out of the chapter what you put into it!
I look forward to 2004 being the best year for the Atlanta Chapter!

STEEL PONY EXPRESS RALLY VI -- CHOPPERS AND A GREAT TIME IN "THE BIG EASY"
Over the past several months, watching the Discovery Channel's series "American Chopper" I have felt intrigued by the concept of custom choppers. As a result, when I saw that the Steel Pony Rally was in New Orleans at the end of October and would feature virtually all of the leading name bike builders brandishing their creations, I jumped at the chance to register and go. What really drew me was the fact that the Teutuls from Orange County Choppers were the featured builders.
What I saw was really a treat. Paul Sr., Paulie and Mikey were there with all the "theme" bikes they had made - Black Widow, Fire Bike, Jet Bike, Comanche Bike, Mikey's Bike. One has to see them first hand and study them a while to really
appreciate all the detail and uniqueness of these one-of-a-kind bikes. As many times as I have seen each episode, not all the details of any single bike are evident until viewed "live and in the flesh." They've also produced three new bikes which will be the subject of new episodes, a POW-MIA bike, a New York Jets bike, and a Snap-On Tools bike. Their new season begins December 8 and will be almost underway by the time you read this. The guys from OCC. were as friendly as time would allow and they drew a huge crowd - Friday was the day to see them because on Saturday and Sunday you could not hardly get near their booth. They autographed every shirt and hat they sold which I would guess were in the ten thousands of each. Also on hand were Billy Lane, Indian Larry, Dave Perewitz and Roger Bourget all of whom went head to head in different episodes of the "Biker Build Off," which was also a production of the Discovery Channel. Jesse James and Paul Jaffe were also supposed to show up but they did not make it, although Jesse's "West Coast Choppers" did have a booth. The thing I noticed too, is that there were a lot of lesser known or perhaps unknown but very talented builders present, and their bikes were equally unique and gorgeous. The proliferation of these bikes indicates this seems to be a rapidly growing segment of the motorcycle market.
The other draw of course was "The Big Easy," New Orleans itself. Jazz, blues, great food (Mr. B's and K-Paul's) café au lait and beignets! The weather for the weekend was really good although a bit hot on Friday, and my only regret is that we only had one day each way to travel which prevented us from riding our bikes down. The bayous south of New Orleans offer some very scenic riding and the Tabasco plant (motto is "Bite Me") in Avery Island offer tours, so next year I think I will go earlier so I can do some of those things. The streets of the Big Easy itself however make riding a bike truly a younger person's game - they are rough! Anyone who rode on a "rigid" is probably a few inches shorter by now and
definitely feeling older, and we saw more than just one or two butts way up off their seats! Many hotels offered rally rates and the city itself is biker friendly, making it a nice place to visit. Numerous other facets of the city await your discovery, too. All in all, the rally drew about 40, 000, according to the Times-Picayune.
So, want a special fall treat? Try the Steel Pony Rally in New Orleans!

GET WELL SOON
Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery go out to Gary Bell who had some surgery in the latter part of October. Gary, we hope you are feeling better and will soon be up to par and will be back soon.
The chapter also continues in its prayers for Ronnie as he continues his rehabilitation at home.
You guys are missed, so get on back here!

HISTORY AMONG US
I just found out that one of our chapter members was featured in The Enthusiast magazine in Sept-Oct 1975. In his senior year at Southern Tech, Glenn Welch was featured for his entry in The Annual Bathtub Race which Southern Tech/GA Tech used to sponsor each year. His entry, the "Asphalt Angel" took nine months to build and took second place that year in the race despite a broken throttle cable and also took "Best Engineered" honors. All bathtubs had to be powered by motorcycle engines and Glenn's featured a Harley-Davidson SX-175. Other features of his creation were: mag wheels, dual Hurst-Airheart disc brakes, aluminum motor mounts, Hurst shifter and button and tufted interior. Glenn was provided technical assistance by Harley-Davidson Northeast of Tucker, GA.

DEEPEST SYMPATHIES
The chapter would like to extend its deepest sympathies to Stacy and Kenny Huggins on the passing of their son, Collin. Collin, who was ill most of his 5 + years battling lymphoma lost his brave fight on October 29. Some of you may remember the benefit ride this past March 31 to raise money for Leukemia/Lymphoma which featured Collin and Scotti Jo, who is also afflicted. Donations in Collin's name may be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, or through Leslie Vaughters in Motorclothes, who is collecting these tributes at the dealership.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
What an Awesome Year
We are about to close out another awesome year for the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. We currently have more than twelve hundred members, good attendance at our meetings, great participation in our rides, awesome giving spirit for Share House and it's not over yet. I want to thank everyone for your support this year. Due to health reasons, I have not been able to participate in many rides since June but things are looking better and I hope to ride more next year. I will not be the Assistant Director next year, but I plan on continuing doing the newsletter unless someone comes along and wants the job. I would also like to thank everyone that has helped assemble the newsletter for mailing. We've gotten it out by the end of each month, which is great considering we have approximately twenty-four hundred pieces of paper to collate, fold, label and stamp. I continue to be amazed at your generosity of volunteering your time for this task, and I thank you again.
Thanks to everyone that showed up for the chapter photo that will be in an upcoming issue of Hog Tails. We had more than one hundred of our twelve hundred members show up. If you would like a copy of the picture (for a small fee), contact
Hank Somma, our photographer.
I sincerely want to thank you for your concern, love, prayers and support.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
Well, here we are again in our final month of another fantastic year of riding and wonderful events with Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. By being involved in our chapter, I've had the opportunity for many, many lasting memories and great times - each year seems better than the last. I hope you've enjoyed the chapter as much as I have, and I hope you will remember to thank our officers, ride captains and volunteers who've worked hard this year to give us lots of great events and memorable rides. Thanks to everyone who helped with Ladies of Harley - I couldn't have done it without you!
Share House Thanksgiving
Thanks to everyone who made their donations of nonperishable food for the Share House Thanksgiving baskets. The families who received the baskets were truly amazed and appreciative. Once again, we out did ourselves and I couldn't be
prouder of our chapter members' generosity.
Share House Christmas
Starting December 1 the Share House Angels will be hanging on the tree in the dealership. We have a few more angels this year than we did last year, but I know our chapter is up to the mission of making sure all these children and mothers have a
wonderful Christmas. Please consider adopting an Angel (or two). Remember that the Wish Lists are under the tree so please take it when you adopt your angel.
Please bring Angel's wrapped gifts to the Christmas party on December 13. Be sure to tape the Angel card to your gift so we'll know who it belongs to. If you purchase more than one gift for your Angel (which we encourage you to do), please
just copy the card and be sure to tape one card to each gift.
If you chose not to adopt an Angel but still want to help, you can purchase a gift and bring it to the party, unwrapped, and we will match it with a child or mother. Remember, by bringing a gift to the Christmas party, you will receive an additional 10% off all purchases made during the party (except bikes of course).
Toy Ride
The Toy Ride for Share House will be on December 20. We will meet at the dealership at 10:30 and leave at 11:00 am This ride is escorted the entire distance to Hunter Park in Douglasville. Once at the park, we will have a Christmas party for
the mothers and children (in the building there). Santa Claus will be there, and we will have craft activities for the children. The children will actually not be able to open your angel gifts at the party (they get them on Christmas morning), but they will receive a goody bag and a smaller gift from Santa to take home. The party should be done by 1:00 pm This ride goes rain or shine, cold or warm. Last year there were 58 bikes; let's see if we can beat that number this year!
Happy Holidays!

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Rolls to a Close
As 2003 rolls to a close I sit here thinking back on all the great times I've had riding with and participating in Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. events. As this year's Safety Officer I would like to say that I have enjoyed writing articles, giving presentations, hosting guest speakers sharing their knowledge, leading rides and groups of others' rides. This year has been a blast for me.
As we approach the cold season please dress appropriately. There is nothing 'cool' about dressing down and freezing to death. Thermals, chaps, and heated gear definitely are high on the list for me. Matter of fact, I was riding last week thinking to myself that I need to invest in heated socks and gloves.
Mountain riding...last weekend I was out riding in the North Georgia mountains and I pulled off the side of the road to stop and watch the passers by. It was interesting to sit and watch the different types of traffic. I observed bicyclists, moms and kids in mini vans, travelers with out of state tags, pickup trucks of locals (Fannin County), sport bikes and sports cars racing through the hills. The most notable were the racers. In this particular stretch of road the racers were flying by at WOT (wide-open throttle). As I enjoyed watching them, I couldn't help but think about the fact that these folks are driving on the same roads as you and me, the mini vans, the pickup trucks, the bicyclists, etc. While they seemed quite skilled at the art of racing, I did sit and think about the impact they are having on the roads. Those bikes and cars are built to race, but they should not be raced on our public roads and streets. Whether riding your Harley or driving your car, be vigilant of the racers up there and frequently glance in your mirrors. They will come up on you between two quick glances in your mirror. If you are riding single file and do not have gravel or road hazards then you are probably riding outside-in as you apex the turns. Before you apex your turn (approach the inside of the turn) be sure and check your inside mirror. If you ride with me near the front of one of my mountain rides you can see what I'm talking about. If you do get a sporting visitor one foot from your handlebars, do not become alarmed. Just give them a little room. They will quickly disappear before your eyes as they roll on the throttle and knee drag the next turn.
I would like to thank several people and groups of people. My thanks go out to the group that appointed me in my position, the individuals that have listened and made suggestions to me during my appointment, the Officers and Road Captains that assisted me with my ride groups, and the dealership for giving us a meeting place, equipment, and tag alongs for the overnight runs. I would also like to thank all the folks that brought a smile on my face, patted me on the back, gave me hugs and warm welcomes, and helped me out when needed. To everyone I would like to say that I have appreciated everything you have done for me and the chapter.
The spirit of this chapter lies in the hearts and minds of everyone that takes part in this group. I would like to encourage your participation and volunteerism. I look forward to next year's rides, events, and activities.
Be safe and live to ride another day.
Until we ride again.

H.O.G. AROUND THE SHOP
Somebody told me the Holiday Season is fast approaching. I'm still trying to get over New Years. My parents always said the older you get the faster the years go by. Were they ever right?! At the rate this one went by, I feel about 220 years old.
It has been a great year for Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Membership is up in the twelve hundred plus range, more and more people are coming to meetings, and better yet returning month after month. It is getting more and more difficult to remember who I am talking to when I am at the dealership, or at an H.O.G. function. This is bad, because I don't like not remembering people and their names. If I look at you funny it is probably because I am trying to remember your name, or where I saw you before. This is also good, because it means more new people are coming around, and we are getting a more diversified membership.
Meeting attendance has been wonderful. January meeting had 115 and October had 200 members. Coincidentally these are the high and low for the year. Average for the 10 months was 159. I was going to try and count the number of rides and
activities we sponsored this year. I had to take off my shoes by the time I got to February, so I gave up. I'll bet the number will reach well over 100 H.O.G. activities that were available to our membership in 2003. Between Hank Somma's short lunch rides, and several long weekend rides, there were enough things going to give everyone in the chapter something to do. Our Officers and Ride Captains have been really busy.
Share House, our local Charity has benefitted from this increase in membership. I love what this place does, and encourage everyone to help out with the Christmas angels Terri Felton is preparing. The March of Dimes Ride for Healthier babies
went well. We did not do so great for MDA, so we need some improvement in this area next year.
We lost some friends, both young and old, had some injuries and sickness. This is what happens in a group this large. We have supported the grieving and recovering because we are all members of an extended family. This is what families do.
With thanks for the support from Eddie and Chris Houghton, and all the members of the Harley-Davidson Atlanta staff. I want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season. Let's make 2004 and even better year. Keep in mind it's a motorcycle
club and we are here to ride safe and have fun.

Savannah Ride Recap
It was a crisp 50 degree morning start from the house to Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, where Joan and I picked up five other bikes and Delee Murrah. I would like to thank Delee for pulling a trailer seven hours following us through the country side of Georgia, instead of opting for the easy four and half hours on the interstate. Thanks Delee, Buster and Lizzie. We picked up another bike at the truck stop at I-20 and 441 and had lunch in Sandersville at the Villa, very good food! We rode cross country, no interstate, until we hit I-95 about 15 miles north of the rally exit. We pulled in about 4:00 pm, with plenty of
time to register. The ride back on Sunday, again great weather, for seven hours or so of great Georgia back roads with six of us on four bikes. Which we really enjoyed.
