Student Objectives: Change font, font style, size, color, underline style, and font effects; Highlight text and change the case, Align text and change the vertical alignment; Copy format and style; Use Click and Type to insert text.

What is formatting?
Formatting changes the way a document looks.  It involves arranging the shape, size, type, and general makeup of a document.  It makes a document look pretty by adding or changing features such as bolding, italics, indenting, alignment, font size, color, and style, etc.

What is a font?
1)
A font is the typeface of letters. Fonts can be dressy or casual.
2) Command(s): for font is Format, Font or choose the Font dialog box from the Formatting toolbar. Therefore, there is more than one way to change fonts.

What are the 2 types of fonts?
1)
Serif fonts: These are considered dressy fonts, they have lines or curly cews at the end of them. They are typically used for titles, headings, and page numbers.  (Here is an example of a serif font: Times New Roman)
2) Sans Serif: Characters or lines without lines or curly cews at the end of the characters.
(Here is an example of a sans serif font: Arial)

How are font sizes measured?
1) By point sizes.  The higher the point size, the higher the font.  (Example: 10 pt, 12 pt, 14 pt)
2) The standard size for font text is 12 point.

What is font style?
1) Font style refers to certain standard changes in the appearance of a font.
2) Font styles are using bold, italic, underline, etc.  More than 1 font style may be applied to a piece of text at any given time.

How do I change font style, size, and color?
1) By choosing Format, Font, then choosing the options as desired by the user.
2) By choosing the Font size box or Font color box icon from the Formatting toolbar.
3) Choosing the B, I, or U icon for font style.
4) Selecting text and right clicking for the shortcut menu.

What are font effects?
1) Font effects enhance your text.  Font effects include outline, shadow, emboss, small caps, strikethrough, etc.
2) Command:  Format, Font, Effects

What is highlighting?
1) Used to emphasize an important part of the document.  Highlighting is usually done in color, just like a handheld highlighter.
2) How do I do it?  Select text, then select the Highlight button on the toolbar.

What is case?
1) Case refers to whether letters are capitalized or not.  It converts text from upper to lower case and vice versa.
2) Command:  Choose Format, Change Case.

What is alignment?
1) How text is positioned on the page.
2) It shows if text is centered, aligned left, aligned right, or justified.

How do I center?
1) Select or highlight the appropriate text then choose the Center icon from the toolbar.
2) Choose Format, Paragraph, Alignment, then Center from the menu bar.

What are the commands for alignment?
1) Choosing Format, Paragraph, Alignment from the menu bar
OR
2) Choosing the icons from the toolbar labeled Align left, Align  Right, Center, or Justify.

What is vertical alignment?
1) It aligns text between the top and bottom margins.
2) Command:  File, Page Setup, Layout.

What is Click and Type?
1) It is a useful feature that you can use to quickly insert text and other items into a blank area of a document.
2) It saves you from having to enter blank lines or tabs manually in order to position the insertion point where you want it.  Text can be left-aligned, right-aligned, or centered depending on the way the pointer is moved when clicking and typing.
3) How do I use it?  Simply double-click in the document where you want to insert text and begin typing.

What is Format Painter?
1) It allows you to copy the format of a style of a block of text rather than the text itself.
2) How do I use it?: Select the formatted text that you want to copy; then click Format Painter button (looks like a paintbrush); then select the new text that you want to format.
