Complications of Myopia

Complications occur more frequently with higher Myopia. Though moderate and low myopia can sometimes show these changes too.
Weaker eye wall - due to thin sclera.
Myopic Degeneration in retina and choroid.
Retinal complications - thin retina, therefore higher chances of peripheral retinal breaks or holes. This occurs because the retina cannot expand with the elastic sclera .It is like holding paper and rubber band together and pulling both ends, the paper tears off, though the rubber can stretch. In the same way, sclera can stretch, but the retina gives way.
Retinal detachment, macular holes, are more common especially in higher myopia.
Also the Choroid, the pigment layer sandwiched between retina and sclera becomes thinner and thinner. The blood vessels also get stretched and bleed, especially at the delicate Macula to form `Fuch's spots`.

Therefore before any cosmetic surgery to correct the myopia is done, it is very important to have your retina examined. It is possible that with the corrective surgery your spectacles may disappear but retinal problems persist, and have to be looked after.

Myopes are prone to get glaucoma.
