Maria's Story Continued...7

When the police phoned the nuns in Aberdeen to tell them we were there we had given ourselves up do you know what they did. The nuns said they could not come and collect us that day so what did the police do they only put us in a remand home overnight we were quite scared as you went through one door the door was locked and so on. It was quite scary as there were all sort of people in there. The nuns came to collect us the next day all sweetness and light to the staff of coarse you would have thought butter wouldn't have melted in their mouth's but we knew different. We arrived back at Aberdeen and we got a good beating for running away and then we were split up and I was made scrub this huge dinning room on my knees while one of the nuns stood over me. You will never guess what they gave me to scrub this floor with a bowl of water with a toothbrush honestly I am not joking and it took me for ever to scrub this room especially as the nun would belt me round the head and tell me it was not good enough and that I had missed a bit so it took even longer to do. My knees ached and were so sore when I had finished I can tell you. Myself and this other girl who were on the run together stayed away the longest as all the others were caught within two or three days. The girls were warned not to speak to us but one or two of them managed to tell us they were forbidden to speak to us so effectively we were sent to Coventry Oh! how I was so miserable but this went on for days how I longed for school because not known to the nuns we did speak to each other and they all thought we were hero's for staying away so long. To get out of there and have my mates at school speak to me it was like heaven as I had a reprieve while I went to school. I loved school mainly because I was out of the home and I am sure I would have learnt more at school had I not been so tired and fell asleep most days due to being deprived of my sleep in the night for something or other. We were known at school as the kids from the home and the ones who lived at home were known to us as the outsiders.
