Jerry is a well-known fiddler and an excellent composer from Cape Breton
Island, N.S. The most inspiration to play the fiddle came from his father;
Jerry Holland senior. He also was inspirered by many well-known fiddlers
such as; Winston 'Scotty' Fitzgerald, Jimmy Kelly, Johnny Wilmot, Angus
Chisholm, Cameron Chisholm, Aubey and Bert Foley, Bill Lamey, well-known
composer Dan R. MacDonald, and others. Tunes composed by some of these
fiddlers can be found in "Jerry Holland's Collection of Fiddle Tunes"
which was edited by lighthouse keeper and close friend: Paul S. Cranford.
Many of Jerry's tunes can be found in this well put-together book of Fiddle
tunes.
Jerry was born in Boston Massachusetts. 1955. He has a number of fiddle recordings;
he started his recording career at age 18. His first was entitled "Jerry
Holland" moving on he recorded the albums by the names: The Cape Breton
Symphony, American festival of fiddle tunes, Cape Breton's Greatest hits,
Music from the Simon Fraser Collection, Master Cape Breton fiddler, Lively
Steps, Jerry Holland Solo, A tribute to Dan R. MacDonald, A session with Jerry
Holland, Fathers and sons, and his latest (a 1995 recording) entitled
"The Fiddlesticks Collection". Most of these are only available on cassette,
However, his latest is available on both C.D. and Cassette.
Jerry started his fiddle career at age 5. His first memory of the
fiddle involved Scotty Fitzgerald at a Halifax Mass in 1958.
Jerry is a well-known top-nautch fiddler and composer, he is a very nice
sounding fiddler. His tunes have been recorded by many well-known artists,
Jerry is a well respected fiddler among other fiddlers. He is also the
Musical Director of the Ceilidh trail school of Music, in Cape Breton.
It is always an extreme pleasure to watch live performances by this
well-rounded musician!
