DIRECTOR'S REPORT
“Changing the Guard”
As the 2004 riding season draws to a close, I would like to thank the chapter for supporting me as
your Director these past three years. I’ve been blessed to have worked with a great officer team
which has come up with really good ideas and to have had the members respond as they did by
participating in the things we have offered. And while I am counting blessings, the support and
trust I have received from the dealer ownership and the way in which they have supported the
chapter has been tremendous and unequaled.
Over the past three years, I think a lot of progress has been made in terms of getting folks out to
ride and to participate in meetings and activities. I have enjoyed the challenge of leading a team
both eager and capable of moving the chapter forward. The current Officer team has worked
hard to put together a varied program of riding and activity opportunities for you and your
response to that has been truly great. Participation is up three to four fold and it is rewarding to
see you all taking part and offering feedback, most of which has been very positive. More of you
are volunteering and a higher number of folks are stepping forward to be road captains. This is
what it takes to have a great chapter---all the vision and planning doesn’t mean much unless the
members respond by taking part both as participants and in having a hand in making it happen
through their volunteering. We’ve seen many members from other chapters come over to “check us out” because they heard some good things about our rides and how friendly a chapter we are.
So the stage is set for great things to continue. And I am confident that they will, but under new
leadership. There are other folks in our chapter who have things to contribute and they deserve a
chance to do so. New ideas and new management styles make for continued growth for our
chapter and it deserves nothing less; so some current officers will change positions while others
step aside and perhaps assume a smaller role or perhaps no role at all. Personally, I will serve as a
Road Captain next year to lead some of my favorite rides and to plan some new ones. I have been
involved in the Atlanta Chapter for seven years or so and it is truly in my blood. I have also tried
to “objectively” observe our chapter in contrast to others and I honestly believe that we are the nicest and friendliest of them all. You guys are the best hands down! We do ride a lot and we
have a heck of a lot of fun, which is what H.O.G. says it is all about. The rest of it, like who has
the most members and who won what charity outings are not, in my mind, the right things to
focus on. Its all about participation and camaraderie.
So thank you again for the opportunity to have served you. It has truly been my pleasure! I hope
all of you have the happiest of holidays with family and friends and are looking forward to another
great year of riding in 2005.
Calling All Whiskey Drinkers (Or One You Might Know)
While touring the Jack Daniel’s distillery in October we learned what was meant by a “single barrel” whiskey. It means that select barrels are selected by the Master Distiller to be bottled and sold from an individual barrel to a single purchasers. Each bottle is numbered with the barrel number on it. When bought this way, the purchaser receives approximately 40-6 bottle cases on a
pallet, PLUS the barrel itself, signed by the Master Distiller and fitted with a brass plaque custom
engraved to the purchaser’s specification. Each single barrel purchaser is recognized at the
distillery with an engraved wooden “brick” on the wall of the bottling facility. The purchaser then becomes a member of “The Single Barrel Society”. It is interesting to note that one of the Tennessee H.O.G. chapters is a member of “The Single Barrel Society”.
Several of us were wondering if our chapter might be interested in making such a purchase.
Windy Hawkins suggested that if we did, the barrel could be kept at the shop and used as a
collection site for funds for the charity of our choosing, with the idea that once per quarter or so
the money be taken out and donated to the charity, such as SHARE House or MDA.
The cost of a single barrel is somewhere between $8,000 and $9,000 (depending on state and
local taxes), which equates to about $34.00 to $38.00 per 750ml bottle (very close to the old
“fifth”). To this per bottle price we will add a $5.00 per bottle “donation” to go to the SHARE House (about $1000 in all). Please keep in mind that in local liquor stores Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel whisky is generally about $45.00 per bottle plus tax.
In order to do this we need to pre-sell the 233 bottles and collect the money up front which would be held in a chapter “barrel” account. The barrel would make a very unique item for the chapter to display at the dealership. Buying this way would offer some savings over the bottle price if one were to buy it locally from a liquor store. If you do not drink whiskey yourself, perhaps this would make a very nice gift for someone you know who does.
Here is the overall process involved in doing this:
1. I will contact the distributor who will arrange for delivery to a local liquor store.
2. Once the store is selected, a more exact price can be determined per bottle. The store location
will determine the tax implications. A single barrel yields 233-244 bottles, depending on the
“Angel’s Share” (evaporation), but the exact figure is not known until bottling occurs. The distributor rep will give us the pricing.
3. Once the price is determined, we will collect the money. Payment can be made to Rene’, who will record the name, number of bottles ordered and the date ordered. Checks are preferred and
should be made payable to the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
4. Once the money is in the bank, payment can be made to the distributor and the order will be
placed.
5. Following order placement, bottling takes place in about six to eight weeks.
6. The order is delivered to the local liquor store, and we will arrange pick up.
7. Distribution of individual orders will occur on a SATURDAY and that date will be published
in advance.
8. Orders will be taken on a first come, first serve basis, so you may order as many bottles as you
like. The first 233 bottles sold does it.
9. If the full barrel price is not collected within a reasonable amount of time, such as 45 to 60
days, we will deem there is not sufficient interest in doing this and all money will be refunded.
Stay tuned for more details in the January 2005 HOGWASH!

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
Wet Weather Riding
It's now officially Fall and no matter where you live it’s probably a wet season. If you find
yourself riding through rain drops, follow this advice: SLOW DOWN!
Inclement weather can slow your reactions and cause fatigue. Loss of traction robs your
motorcycle of its two greatest assets; quickness and agility. With your ability to react and control
your bike diminished, and stopping power greatly reduced, you need the extra time to scan ahead
in order to avoid sudden movements and quick stops. Look ahead through curves in the road
because your bike has even less traction in a lean.
Beware of standing water which decreases your traction and can cause you to hydroplane and
lose control. Avoid slick spots, such as painted lines, metal manhole covers, railroad tracks and
bots dots. Remember that if you get caught in the first rain following a dry spell the roads are
covered with lots of oil and dirt that will be lifted to the surface, especially in areas like the center
of the lane.
So slow down, be prepared and ride safely!

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
The End of Another Great Year
Here we are, coming to the end of 2004. We have all done well. We have had a great year of fun
and safe riding. We’re coming to that time of the year when most motorcyclist don’t do much riding. Our bikes sit in the garage and don’t get much attention. Then we start getting that itch to get the bike out and go for a ride.
What I want to do is give you a couple of acronyms that will help you to have your bike ready
and “yourself” when that itch strikes you: . T-CLOCS, MOM and SEE.
T-Tires/Wheels-pressure, tread, rims/spokes, bearings, brakes
C-Controls-levers, switches, cables, hoses, throttle
L-Lights/Electrics-working condition
O-Oil/other fluids (coolant, hydraulics, fuel) – levels, leaks
C-Chassis-suspension, drive components
S-Sidestand (centers stand)
MOM – Motorcycle Owner’s Manual: This is your primary source of information about how a motorcycle should be inspected and maintained. This will help to ensure a trouble- free ride and give you the confidence that your motorcycle will respond properly.
S-Search-to scan aggressively for potential factors and hazards
E-Evaluate-anticipate problems, factors accumulate and interact to form a hazard or conflict
E-Execute-three action step-adjust speed, adjust position, communicate your intentions
Always remember to dress appropriately and to be in the right frame of mind. Don’t get on your bike if you’re sick, taking medication that could make you drowsy or slows down your response time. Don’t forget passenger should also be dressed appropriately.
So, when that itch strikes you, take time and check out your bike and yourself. Make sure your
bike is ready. It will only take a few extra minutes once you get use to looking at everything.
You’ll be glad you did.
Until next time, be careful and ride safely. My wife and I would like to wish all of you a very
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Until next time “be safe” and keep the shinny side up.

Volunteers Needed
I need volunteers to work a Gift Wrapping Table at the dealership on weekends between
Thanksgiving and Christmas. We provide free gift wrapping, but take donations for the Share
House. Last year we raised several hundred dollars doing this. There will be an After
Thanksgiving Sale November 26th, 27th, and 28th that will hopefully bring a lot of shoppers into the dealership. Please contact me if you are available to volunteer a couple of hours wrapping gifts.
SHARE House Christmas Angel Tree
Look for the angels to adopt on the Christmas tree at the dealership. The child/mom’s name and age will be on the angel. Their wish list will be in a notebook under the tree. Gifts will need to be
wrapped with a copy of the angel attached. They will need to be at the dealership by December
12, 2004.
On Saturday, December 18, 2004 we will have a ride for the SHARE House with Santa as our
special guest.
Chapter Christmas Social
Mark your calendars and make plans to attend the Chapter Christmas Social on Friday, December
10, 2004 from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM at the dealership. Bring an unwrapped gift for SHARE
House and receive an additional 10% off merchandise (excluding motorcycles) for a total discount

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Signal Mountain Ride Recap
As I approached the meeting point of Hwy. 278 & 61 I wondered if the day was going to begin as
my night had ended . . . two desktops, two printers and an office copier all malfunctioning . . . ah,
life with four budding internet savvy children. Nonetheless, a fellow HOG member and I
communicated on wireless and were able to print 15 copies of directions and maps.
When I arrived at the QT there were six bikes, then 10, then 20, . . . final count 31 BIKES!
WOW, LIFE IS GOOD! Promises of sunshine and 80 degree temperatures to be shared with 37
HDA members. Fortunately, I had many fellow Road Captains on hand to manage the group . . .
Scott, Chris, Terry and Doug . . . Doug who? (Details on that one later). Many thanks to all of
you for your comforting words of confidence.
We made our way north on 101 around Rome, GA and headed to the beautiful "mountains" of
NW GA and TN via 337, 193, 157, 41, 27 and the unforgettable "W" road. There were some
relaxing roads to see the beautiful Fall colors and some challenging curves to hone our skills. As
usual, the weather forecast was incorrect, it was mostly gray skies, misty rain and fog. But this did
not dampen the spirits of the 37 participants. You could feel the electricity in the air at our second
gas stop in anticipation of Lookout and Signal Mountains. Everyone wanted to know what is the
"W" road? Was this some pre-election prank by the rookie Road Captain?
At our second gas stop, I made the decision that Lunch plans at the quaint LOOKOUT
MOUNTAIN CAFE would sacrifice riding time. So we enjoyed the tree canopy of the Lookout
roads and made it down the steep slope of Hwy. 318 into Tiftonia where we conquered the
Cracker Barrel, Taco Bell and the Waffle House. After lunch, we headed north on 41, traversed
the western slope of Signal Mountain via old Hwy. 27 for a rest stop at the River's Inn. A
beautiful place on the river with views of Lookout, Raccoon and Signal Mountains . . . and of
course the river. (Sorry NOEL, no time for Frog's Leg's, it's 3:00 p.m.)
Upon leaving the River's Inn the passenger on bike number 28 apparently forgot to secure their
helmet. Not being able to see that far back, I am told it became a bouncing ball. However, Doug-our Safety Officer-was riding sweep and he put the passenger and helmet back together. We
pulled off to gather for the ride up the "W" road . . . no Doug and no bike # 28. We wait, we
wait, we call cell phones. I ride out to collect them. No fellow members in sight. I return to "the
pack" to lead the ride up Signal. Everyone made it safely up the "W" and you could hear the echo
of their "whoa, I can't believe I could see cars and other bikes over my head!"....and the best was
yet to come! We stopped at our meeting point on Signal, but again no signs of bike # 28 and our
Safety Officer . . . were they safe? Was Doug still instructing them how to properly secure a
helmet? I was worried, but only for a short while. There were 35 of us and more miles to go.
We made it down the northeast slope of Signal via 10 miles of switchbacks . . . getting into
swaying the curves left, right, left. ALL 35 of us made it to the bottom and headed to the last gas
stop where the ride officially ended . . . no Safety Officer in sight. We shared the thrills of the day,
secured friendships and collected into groups for our ride back to Hotlanta.
It was rewarding to hear the thanks and positive comments from my friends. I hope I exceeded
the needs of "my 35 customers" . . . and Doug.
I look forward to leading another group on Sun., Nov. 21, 2004 for the "One Lane Wooden
Bridge Tour" through Cartersville, Euharlee, Kingston, Pine Log, Waleska and Blackacre!
THANK YOU FELLOW HOG MEMBERS FOR A GREAT MAIDEN VOYAGE!
