2nd Lt. Lawrence C. Blanchard Jr. was born and raised in the area of Shreveport, Louisiana.
2nd Lt. Blanchard was a member A Battery, 29th Field Artillery Battalion, and was killed in action
during the Invasion of Normandy, on June 8, 1944. As the Invasion forces pushed further outward
from Utah Beach against very determined enemy forces, 2nd Lt. Blanchard was killed
by intense fire from a German machine gun position. For his gallantry in action, he
was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
He was among those 50 men killed, mostly from B Battery, 29th Field Artillery, many
of whom were never recovered.
