Reason: For heroism in connection with military operations against an
armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class
Hale distinguished himself while serving as a Cannoner with Battery A,
6th Battalion, 29th Artillery, 4th Infantry Division. On 26th March
1969 Private First Class Hale's battery area came under enemy 105MM
artillery fire. Despite the danger to his own life, he remained with
his gun and returned fire on the enemy in an attempt to knock out
their position. He continued to fire on the enemy until his area took
a direct hit by an enemy round, seriously wounding him. Private First
Class Hale's exceptional courage, determination,and exemplary devotion
to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military
service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United
States Army.
